Akaroa Winery Banks Peninsula 2016 and 2015 Pinot Noirs

Akaroa Winery is the brand of Allan Ransley and Timberly Hughes who operate Takamatua Valley Vineyards on Banks Peninsula, near Christchurch. They took over a 26 ha property which included 2.2 ha of Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Riesling and Gewurztraminer, the vines established in 1995. The vineyard area has been slowly increased, but an extra 800+ vines planted in 2013 will see double their former production. Allan tends to the viticulture, the vineyard now entering its 16th AsureQuality certified organic vintage, and Timberly makes the wine on-site. Here, I review the 2016 and 2015 Akaroa Winery Pinot Noirs.

Pinot Noir from New Zealand – Canterbury & Waipara


Dark, deep, ruby-red colour with slight black-purple hues, a little lighter on the rim, youthful in appearance. The nose is softly full with aromas of gently ripe dark-red berry fruits with a subtle amalgam of dark herbs, lifted violet florals and nuances of spice and delicate earthy detail. Medium-full bodied, the palate has sweetly rich and juicy, up-front flavours of ripe dark-red berry fruits along with nuances of dark-red plums, unfolding some spice and earth elements. The palate is juicy and nearly plush, with moderate concentration, and underlined by fine, grainy tannin structure and balanced acid freshness. The wine carries with energy to a light-fruited finish with some dry grip. This is a sweetly rich and ripe, juicy dark-red berry fruited Pinot Noir with herb and spice nuances on a light, grainy structured palate and a dry finish. Match with wild duck or pork over the next 3-4 years. A multi-clone blend, vines planted in 1995, with a portion of fruit from vines planted in 2013, fully destemmed and fermented to 13.0% alc., the wine aged 7-8 months in seasoned oak. Pinot Noir from New Zealand – Canterbury & Waipara


Even ruby-red colour with garnet hues, a little paler on the edge with hints of bricking. The nose is elegantly concentrated and firm with good depth of dark-red berry fruits harmoniously entwined with dark herbal notes, a little nutty oak, and a touch of minerally reduction. Medium-full bodied, the palate is elegantly proportioned with a tightly bound core of restrained, savoury dark-red berry fruit along with dark and dried herbs, nutty oak and earthy elements, with a little minerally reductive bitterness. This is showing some savoury secondary development, but the palate has fruit sweetness that carries the wine along a fine-textured line with balanced acidity leading to a lively, savoury finish. This is a sweet and savoury dark-red fruited Pinot Noir with dark herb, nutty and earthy detail and a little reduction on a fine, taut palate. Serve with coq au vin over the next 3+ years. A multi-clone blend, vines planted in 1995, fully destemmed and fermented to 13.8% alc., the wine aged 7 months in 25% new oak. Certified AsureQuality organic. 16.5+/20 Dec 2018 RRP $40.00
