Alpha Domus – Flying High

29 September,2011
The wines of the Ham family's Alpha Domus estate are normally promoted in a reserved and stylish fashion, but the latest releases see them flying high, and I believe the Hams can be a little more vocal about them. I recently attended a wonderful vertical tasting of every vintage produced of the Alpha Domus flagship ‘Aviator' wine. I was impressed with the consistent nature of the ‘Aviator', its softer core, compared to many other Hawke's Bay Bordeaux-varietal wines, and the attractive spicy interest, with layers of flavour built in. I also saw a selection of the new and current range of releases. (Click here to read my report.) As in any tasting situation at a hospitality venue with many other tasters present, one's attention can easily diverted from the job, and it was a pleasure to see the three following wines submitted for a review in circumstances that allowed me to look at them a little more carefully. www.alphadomus.co.nz

The Pilot by Alpha Domus Hawke's Bay Rose 2011

Rose from New Zealand – Hawke’s Bay

16+/20
Bright, pale pink with youthful purple hues on the edge. This has a full nose of melons, red berries and ripe, savoury strawberries. Dry to taste, this has good weight and vinous presence on the palate with light and gentle flavours of watermelon, strawberries, and nuances of fresh herbs. Though soft in texture, there is good acidity for freshness, leading to a crisp, dry finish with aromatic strawberry notes. 92% Merlot and 8% Syrah from the winery vineyard, the colour from the addition of the Syrah, fermented to 13.0% alc. and 2.0 g/L rs. Serve as an aperitif and with tapas over the next 2 years. 16.0+/20 Sep 2011 RRP $21.00

Made from 92% Merlot and 8% Syrah was made by the addition of Syrah for colour, the wine cool-fermented to 13.0% alc. and 2.0 g/L rs. Very pale pink with a hint of youthful purple to the colour, this is very tight with fine, light perfumes of red berry fruits and a touch of fresh herbs. Dry with light strawberry and stonefruit flavours, this has delicacy and a light-textured palate that carries a thread of grip adding to the dry, refreshing nature. This should soften to reveal a little more sweetness of fruit over the next year.  Aug 2011

Alpha Domus ‘AD The Aviator' Hawke's Bay 2009

Cabernet Sauvignon from New Zealand – Hawke’s Bay

19-/20

A blend of 37% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, 18% Malbec and 18% Cabernet Franc given a cold soak and basket-press fermented to 14.0% alc., the wine aged 17 months in 75% new French oak. Dark, deep, full ruby-red colour, vibrant and youthful in appearance. The bouquet is full and softly presented with layers of dark red berry fruits and dark plums, with brown spices and cedary oak unfolding. Fresh notes of herbs and redcurrants, along with complexing earth add to the interest of the bouquet. Soft, fulsome and plush on palate, this is full of ripe dark plum and red berry fruit flavours interwoven with Asian spice and cedary oak elements. The flavours are framed in a fine-grained, supple-tannin textured structure. The flavours blossom over a long and sustained finish. This mouthfilling and accessible wine will be a match with rich game meat dishes over the next 8-10+ years. 19.0-/20 Sep 2011 RRP $56.00

Full and deep on bouquet with ripe dark plum aromas, this is complexed by notes of liquorice and spices, tobacco and earth, along with some herb elements. The palate is rich and fleshy, with sweetly ripe, dark berry and plum flavours lifted with an array of exotic spices, cedar and oak, all supported by fine-grained and supple tannins, with fresh acidity. Light golden-yellow colour with some depth and a pale edge, this has a full, very intense and concentrated nose of ripe tropical fruits, marmalade and honey, the botrytis fully interwoven with the fruit. The aromatics are presented with great clarity. Extremely sweet, rich and luscious, this is medium-weighted with full flavours of ripe tropical fruits, especially mango, honey and marmalade, seamlessly balanced by fine, racy acidity providing excellent cut and slipperiness. The wine has an extremely long, lingering finish, with nutty oak nuances emerging.
