Ara Single Estate 2011 Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir

01 August,2012
Winegrowers of Ara are on the edge of cool-climate grapegrowing, with a single estate at the confluence of the Waihopi and Wairau rivers in Marlborough. It is this ‘edginess' which can result in extremely exciting wines, and this is what Ara is all about, using the proven varieties Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir, making striking Marlborough wines. The tiers that issue from ‘The Dart' architecturally awarded operations building are ‘Pathway', ‘Single Estate', ‘Select Blocks' and ‘Resolute'. Jeff Clarke, formerly of Pernod Ricard and Gus Struthers took up the winemaking and vineyard management positions respectively last year picking up from Damian Martin who previously filled those roles. I review two 2011 ‘Single Estate' wines, considered to be Ara's ‘most complete expression' as they incorporate fruit from all blocks, these being produced by the new team. www.arawines.co.nz

Ara ‘Single Estate' Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2011

Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand – Marlborough

16.5/20

Full, even, pale straw-green colour. This has a light, delicate nose of green capsicum, pungent passionfruit and steely gooseberry aromas, attractively lifted, and with hints of bean-like development. Dry to taste, gentle capsicum and gooseberry flavours flow softly across the palate, showing some sweet, lush notes, enhanced by lively acidity. Though softly textured, this has good tension and line, and the palate builds with some depth to carry through to a moderately long finish. This is a soft textured, gently building Sauvignon Blanc that is balanced and easily approachable. Serve with antipasto, seafood, salads and vegetables over the next 2+ years. Fruit from parcels in all areas of the Ara estate, cool-fermented to 13.0% alc., and <1 g/L rs. 16.5/20 Aug 2012 RRP $21.99

Ara ‘Single Estate' Marlborough Pinot Noir 2011

Pinot Noir from New Zealand – Marlborough

17.5/20

Hand-picked and machine-harvested fruit from all areas of the Ara estate, destemmed, given a cold soak and fermented with whole berries to 13.9% alc., the wine aged 9 months in 10% new French oak barrels. Full, purple-hued ruby-red colour with some depth. The bouquet is softly full of dark red berry and plum fruit aromas with notes of tree tomatoes and dark herbs underneath. Medium-bodied, lush, sweetly ripe flavours of dark raspberries and plums feature on the palate. The fruit expression is very primary and up-front, but has a fullness and depth. Soft acidity allows some grainy tannins show along the palate line, leading to a dry finish with raspberry fruit notes. This is a soft, lush and near plump, fruity Pinot Noir with a dry, textured finish. Match with pasta and casseroles over the next 3-4+ years. 17.5/20 Aug 2012 RRP $24.99
