17 August,2012

Richard Klein, the former proprietor of Maria Pia's Trattoria in Thorndon, Wellington, has always had a fascination for the wines as well as the food of Italy. He has continued his work with Italian wines with his Artigiano Imports business where he seeks out and brings into New Zealand small quantities of good value bottlings made by artisans. Appreciating all things that clearly show provenance and respect for the environment, his organic wine selection has a special place in his portfolio of goods. Here is a selection of his latest acquisitions. www.artigianoimports.co.nz

Poggio ai Santi Montepulciano d'Abruzzo DOP 2010

Montepulciano from Italy – Other

18-/20

Poggio ai Santi is a luxury accommodation farmhouse with 40 ha of land. Gian Andrea Tinazzi runs the family vineyard. Montepulciano fruit fermented to 13.5% alc. Saturated black-hued purple-red colour, the bouquet is full, intense and packed with aromas of dark berry fruit with brackish herbs, brown earth and chestnutty notes. Medium-full bodied, well-packed flavours of dark red fruits, dried herbs, earth and chestnut show with good richness and juiciness. The extraction provides soft, mouthfilling textures that support the fruit depth. Some game notes unfold on the finish providing good interest to the soft fruitiness. This is a richly fruited Montepulciano balanced by good soft structure. Match with barbecued red meats and casseroles over the next 4-5 years. Certified organic. 18.0-/20 Aug 2012 RRP $17.50

Fattoria Castellina ‘Impogeo' Toscana Rosso IGT 2009

Sangiovese from Italy – Tuscany

17.5/20

A 110 ha farm situated between Florence and Vinci, the vineyard area 10 ha. Sangiovese, Cabernet Franc and Syrah fermented to 13.0% alc., the wine aged 12 months in French oak. Deep, dark ruby-red colour with garnet hues, lighter on rim. Elegantly concentrated aromas of dark cherries intermingle with plums, earth and complexing game notes on bouquet. Medium-full bodied, poised and piquant bitter cherry fruit flavours are expressed with brightness, juiciness and vitality, and good acid balance. Some game and animal brettanomyces elements emerge, and are interwoven with savoury earthiness, adding another layer of character. The palate is well-proportioned and supported by fine-grained, tight and firm tannins which lead to a dry, grainy finish. A moderately full-bodied Tuscan red with classic bitter-cherry Sangiovese fruit and fine, dry grip, serve with casseroles and game meats over the next 4-6 years. Certified organic. 17.5/20 Aug 2012 RRP $23.50
