Ashwood Estate Gisborne Chardonnay 2010

Chardonnay from New Zealand – Gisborne

18.5+/20

Brilliant straw-yellow with lemon-golden hues to the colour. The nose is powerful, concentrated and tightly bound, very intensely packed with citrus fruit interwoven with tropical fruit notes, complex flint, toast and smoky, nutty oak elements. Full-bodied and powerful in presence, the flavours of citrus fruits and melons are subtle and building. There are layers with mealy, nutty notes, oak toast and a rich lusciousness that unfold in the glass. The mouthfeel is very fine and smooth, showing a creaminess of texture, but cut by fine acidity, the wine possessing good energy and drive. Very long, mealy, nutty and toasty flavours linger on the finish, and the wine retains a degree of elegance. This is a Chardonnay that combines power with finesse. Match with roasted poultry and pork over the next 5-6+ years. 76% Mendoza and 24% clone 95 fruit from 2-3 y.o. vines from a single vineyard on the Back Ormond Road on the ‘Golden Slope', hand-picked the latter portion indigenous yeast fermented, 100% in barrel to 13.8% alc. The wine was aged 10 months in 67% new French oak, with 22% undergoing MLF. Made by Steve Voysey. 18.5+/20 May 2012 RRP $29.00
