Awatere River ‘Single Vineyard’ Marlborough Chardonnay 2016

16 August,2017
Louis Vavasour has continued his family’s legacy of working on Marlborough land which dates back to 1887. The Vavasours feature in the Awatere Valley, where Louis’s parents Peter and Anna established the first commercial grapevines in 1986. The Awatere River Wine Co. was established to showcase Marlborough wine, particularly Awatere bottlings, but Louis’ outlook includes the wider Marlborough area, and the wines he and his winemaker Andrew Parley make are dependably fine examples of the region. Here, I review the 2016 ‘Single Vineyard;’ Chardonnay made from fruit from the Southern Valleys. www.arwc.co.nz

Awatere River ‘Single Vineyard’ Marlborough Chardonnay 2016

Chardonnay from New Zealand – Marlborough

Bright, light golden-yellow colour, a little paler on the rim. This has a softly rich nose with subtle layers of aroma, showing ripe yellow stonefruit with hints of tropical fruits, and nuances of nutty and creamy barrel-ferment, lemon-curd MLF and a little toastiness. Medium-full bodied, the palate has gently rich and vibrant fruit flavours of yellow stonefruits, tropical fruit and citrus fruit, melded with creamy, nutty oak, some lemon-curd and buttery MLF. The flavours are mouthfilling and form a rounded heart, and are enlivened by fresh, lacy acidity. The wine flows with a little alcohol drive along a fine-textured line, leading to a sustained, elegant finish of stonefruit and toast. This is a subtly rich and mouthfilling Chardonnay with balanced, complex layers of interest and some underlying alcoholic power. Match with roasted poultry and pork over the next 4-5 years. 100% Mendoza clone fruit from mature vines from the ‘Wiffen’ vineyard, Southern Valleys, fully barrel-fermented to 14.0% alc., the wine aged 9-10 months in 15% new French oak, undergoing batonnage and approx. 40% MLF. 18.5-/20 Aug 2017 RRP $32.00
