Awatere River Wine Company Sauvignon Blanc & Pinot Noir

04 October,2012

The Vavasour family has had its roots in the Awatere Valley since 1887, and it was the Vavasour family that pioneered commercial grapegrowing and winemaking, Peter and Anna Vavasour planting the first vines in the Dashwood district in 1986 and establishing the region's first winery. Peter and Anna's son Louis Vavasour attended and graduated from Roseworthy agricultural college, and following winemaking experience in France, California and Australia set up the Awatere River Wine Company to make high quality wine to accompany fine food. www.arwc.co.nz

Awatere River Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2012

Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand – Marlborough

17.5+/20

Bright, full and even, pale straw-yellow colour. This has a full, fresh and lively nose, concentrated with limes, gooseberries, with chalky, mineral and pungent passionfruit notes that unfold in layers and in detail. Off-dry to taste, lush, juicy and succulent flavours of gooseberries and tropical fruits fill the mouth with an openness and breadth, the liveliness of the fruit enhanced by mouthwatering acidity. This is up-front, very softly textured, with layers of flavour that unfold and flow in waves. Citrus fruit, minerals and gooseberries linger on a gentle and luscious finish. This is a full, pungent, succulently sweet-fruited Sauvignon that is immediately appealing. Match with Asian and Middle Eastern fare over the next 2+ years. Fruit from the Awatere Valley stainless-steel fermented to 13.1% alc. and 3.5 g/L rs., the wine aged on lees for 2 months. 17.5+/20 Oct 2012 RRP $15.00

Awatere River ‘Single Vineyard' Awatere Valley Pinot Noir 2011

Pinot Noir from New Zealand – Marlborough

17.5/20

Clone UDC5 fruit from a single vineyard in the Lower Dashwood district, destemmed and given a cold soak, then fermented to 14.0% alc., the wine aged 8 months in 30% new French oak barriques. Moderatey full ruby-red colour, lighter on rim. The bouquet is softly full and voluminous with primary aromas of dark strawberry fruit with savoury herbs, fragrant lavender notes and oak spices. Medium-full bodied, this has good depth of bright and juicy aromatic strawberry fruit flavours lifted with oak and enlivened by racy acidity which features in the mouthfeel. Subtle, fine tannins build to provide a good core and carry through to a lightly herbal nuanced, soft red fruited finish showing some alcohol. This is an attractive, soft red fruited Pinot Noir with a lively succulence. Serve with poultry and pork over the next 4-5 years. 17.5/20 Oct 2012 RRP $22.00

Awatere River ‘Reserve' Marlborough Pinot Noir 2009

Pinot Noir from New Zealand – Marlborough

18/20

Full ruby-red colour with some depth, garnet hues on edge. The nose is softly full and dense with dark red berry fruit along with savoury inky notes complexed by significant underlying oak elements, a little game and funkiness. Full-bodied, the flavours of dark red berry fruits, savoury herbs and mushrooms are backed by oak presence, the expression a little reserved at present. Good acidity enlivens the mouthfeel adding juiciness, richness and energy, and the palate is well-structured with fine tannin extraction. This has good presence, and the flavours of savoury red fruits grow with some depth and power on the sustained finish. This Pinot Noir is weighty and well-balanced with rich, savoury red fruits and oak backing. Match with casseroles and slow-cooked red meat dishes over the next 5-6 years. Hand-picked Marlborough fruit destemmed and given a cold soak, then fermented with whole berries to 14.3% alc., the wine aged 20 months in French oak barriques. 18.0/20 Oct 2012 RRP $35.00
