Bird ‘Big Barrel' Pinot Noir 2011

13 June,2012
Steve Bird has made a specialty of employing the ‘Vernou Roll' method of vinification where barrels of wine are gently rolled by hand. He also unusually uses large 900 L barrels for fermentation and storage, reckoning that better oak integration and greater complexities are the result. Steve Bird's approach is clearly highly successful as his 2010 vintage wine (which I rated 5-stars – click here to see my review) is all sold out necessitating the release of the 2011 before projected time. Here is my review of the new wine. www.birdwines.com

Bird ‘Big Barrel' Marlborough Pinot Noir 2011

Pinot Noir from New Zealand – Marlborough

18-/20
Light ruby-red colour with purple hues and some depth, youthful in appearance. This has a soft, ethereal nose of red berry fruits and red florals, attractively fragrant and perfumed. The aromas build with concentration to reveal dried herb notes and raspberry confectionary elements. Medium-bodied, the fruit is bright and juicy, with raspberry liqueur-like flavours, the liveliness enhanced by brisk acidity. The extraction is moderate and provided supple background structure, and along with the acidity forms a good palate line that carries through to a long finish with bright berry fruit and a little oak spice. This is a youthful Pinot Noir with bright, juicy, primary raspberryish fruit, fresh acidity and accessibility. Match with charcuterie and tapas over the next 4-5+ years. Fruit from the Rapaura district, undergoing an initial wild fermentation before being inoculated. The wine spent 14 days on skins then matured in barrel for 9 months. 14.0% alc., 850 cases made. 18.0-/20 Jun 2012 RRP $34.95
