Cable Bay ‘White Label' Waiheke Chardonnay 2008

05 July,2012
The wines from Cable Bay on Waiheke Island are made by Neill Culley and Mel McIntyre with more than a nod to the modern styles of Europe. The Chardonnay wines have an elegance with traditional nutty expressions as well as the complexing contemporary reductive characters. This is evident in the ‘premium' label, which also possesses extra richness and oaking, as well as the lesser-seen ‘White Label' wine, normally reserved for export markets. Recently, I reviewed the 2009 release, sold through Advintage (click here to see), and now I review the 2008 wine. www.cablebay.co.nz

Cable Bay ‘White Label' Waiheke Island Chardonnay 2008

Chardonnay from New Zealand – Northland & Auckland

16+/20

Fruit from the ‘Home' and ‘Edwards' vineyards, fully barrel-fermented to 14.0% alc., and aged on lees in 20% new French oak barriques for 11 months. Bright straw-yellow colour with some green-gold hues. This has a full, broad and developed bouquet of savoury citrus fruits with oxidative nutty interest that grows in density and depth. Full-bodied, rich citrussy fruit flavours are interwoven with nutty notes and expressed with openness. This is quite approachable now, with a soft, textured mouthfeel and discreet acidity. This has an underlying robustness, but remains gentle and presented with ease, the wine finishing with dry, subtly nuanced, hazelnutty elements. This mature, full-flavoured, European-styled, nutty Chardonnay is reminiscent of a good Macon white. Match with poultry and pork dishes over the next 2-3 years. 16.0+/20 Jul 2012 RRP $30.00
