Charles Wiffen Sauvignon Blanc 2011 & Merlot 2010

11 June,2012
The one Marlborough wine label that is right down the middle of the line in style is that of Charles Wiffen. Charles and Sandi Wiffen are among the longest established winegrowers in Marlborough, working with grapes for over three decades. They have 50 ha of vines in the Lower Wairau and the Southern Valleys, and the fruit, tended by Melissa Sutherland is transformed into wine by Anthony and James at West Brook winery in Auckland. Sauvignon Blanc is the mainstay among a range of stars, and this 2011 is the latest release of what the region does best. And surprisingly, Charles Wiffen has one of the rare Marlborough-grown Merlot varietal wines in the range. In these modern times when it is thought the variety cannot consistently succeed so far south, this label confounds many pundits. The 2010 is the new release. www.charleswiffenwines.co.nz

Charles Wiffen Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2011

Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand – Marlborough

17.5-/20
Fruit sourced from a selection of ‘Wiffen' blocks, 10% fermented in seasoned French oak barriques to 13.0% alc. and 2.1 g/L rs, the wine given light lees contact. Bright, very pale straw colour with some green hues, pale on rim. The nose is softly full and voluminous, showing ripe gooseberry fruit, yellow capsicums and subtle hints of tropical fruits. Dry to taste, clean, fresh gooseberry and capsicum flavours gently unfold and flow seamlessly through the palate. The mouthfeel is smooth and the acidity is well-balanced and lacy. There is a gradual building of weight and presence which adds to the drive, leading to a moderately long, delicately nuance finish of limes and white florals. This is a gently expressed Sauvignon Blanc with good presence and fine textures to match with seafood and poultry dishes over the next 2 years. 17.5-/20 Jun 2012 RRP $21.35

Charles Wiffen Marlborough Merlot 2010

Merlot from New Zealand – Marlborough

16.5+/20
Ruby-red colour with some depth, lighter garnet hues on edge. This has a fresh, elegant and aromatic bouquet of redcurrant fruit, fresh red plums and florals, with notes of herbs emerging in glass. Medium-bodied, restrained flavours of redcurrants and fresh herbs feature with succulence and juiciness. This is well-proportioned with good depth and moderate concentration, balanced by fine, supple tannins and good acid brightness. The acidity carries light currant and red capsicum notes on the finish. This is an elegant and fine-featured, cooler spectrum Merlot with attractive aromatics. Match with roasted lamb over the next 4-5 years. Hand-picked fruit fermented to 13.5% alc., the wine hand-plunged and aged 9 months in 35% new French oak barriques. 16.5+/20 Jun 2012 RRP $25.35
