Fairhall Downs – A Family Wine Estate

08 February,2012
Fairhall Downs Family Estate was established by Ken and Jill Small in 1982 when they planted on 8 ha in the Fairhall River Valley. In 1994 they formed a partnership with daughter Julie and her husband Stuart Smith, and the first Fairhall Downs wines were made with the 1996 vintage. Nowadays the estate, on Wrekin Road at the head of the Brancott Valley covers 32 ha. Both Ken and Stuart come from agricultural backgrounds which have stood them in good stead to take on the viticultural aspects of the operation. The wines are made by the highly experienced Brian Bicknell of Mahi. The overriding philosophy is operating as a family business, where "small is beautiful” (pun intended, no doubt), and the wines faithfully represent the single vineyard estate. www.fairhalldowns.co.nz

Fairhall Downs ‘Single Vineyard' Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2011

Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand – Marlborough

18.5-/20
Brilliant, pale straw-yellow colour with slight green hues, pale on edge. The bouquet is soft and full with ripe aromas of tropical fruits and gooseberries and hints of passionfruit lifted by white florals and fresh fermentation esters. Dry, this has good body and fruit weight with deep flavours of gooseberries and passionfruit providing density and very fine textures. The acidity is bright and racy and enhances the flavours filling the palate, and carries a long lingering finish with pungent notes. Fruit from the ‘Fairhall Downs' vineyard fermented with 10% in French barriques to 14.0% alc. and 0.9 g/L rs. A well-balanced Sauvignon Blanc with body and zestiness to match with firm seafood, chicken and turkey over the next 2-3+ years. 18.5-/20 Feb 2012 RRP $19.95

Fairhall Downs ‘Single Vineyard' Marlborough Pinot Gris 2010

Pinot Gris from New Zealand – Marlborough

17.5+/20
Bright starw-yellow colour with slight lemon-gold hues, pale on rim. This is tight and fine in aromatics, with stonefruit, oak spice and flint elements intermingling. Dry, with a rich, fulsome texture and good weight, this has lush flavours of yellow stonefruits complexed with mealy elements, nuts and oak spices. The palate has depth and real presence. The acidity is restrained, but this has good liveliness and balance, and the finish is sustained, the flavours unfolding more nuances with time in the glass. This is a rich Pinot Gris with an interesting amalgam of stonefruit and oak notes that will match Middle Eastern and Mediterranean inspired fare over the next 3-4 years. ‘Fairhall Downs' vineyard fruit hand-picked and WBP, fermented, a small portion in seasoned oak, to 14.0% alc. and 3.7 g/L rs. 17.5+/20 Feb 2012 RRP $25.95

Fairhall Downs ‘Single Vineyard' Marlborough Pinot Noir 2009

Pinot Noir from New Zealand – Marlborough

17.5+/20
Hand-picked fruit indigenous yeast fermented to 14.0% alc., the wine spending 3 weeks on skins, then aged 11 months in French barriques. Even ruby-red with garnet hues to the colour, light on rim. This has a softly full nose, lifted with aromas of strawberries and red florals and subtle savoury, secondary complexities of dried herbs along with spicy oak notes. Medium-full bodied, lifted red fruits and spice elements are presented with lusciousness, the flavours forming a good concentrated core, gently unfolding and filling the palate. Fine tannin extraction and bright acidity balance the fruit sweetness and provide supple textures and linear drive. This is a lively and lifted, lush Pinot Noir with refined tannin grip, just beginning to develop interest. Match with Asian poultry and pork dishes over the next 5-6+ years. 17.5+/20 Feb 2012 RRP $35.95
