Georges Road Vineyard 2011 Reds

31 May,2012

I've been highly impressed with the white wines from Kirk Bray's vineyard off Georges Road in the Waipara Valley. The delicacy of style shows a deft hand in retaining subtleties of fruit and excellent phenolic management. (Click here to read my latest reviews of his 2011 Riesling and Pinot Gris.) I see Kirk as a winemaker who has the ability to craft some superb Waipara wines from his vineyard, such that I paid him a visit last week. (Click here to see my report on visiting.) His 8 ha vineyard is planted 50% to Riesling and 25% each to Pinot Gris and Syrah. He sources his Pinot Noir from the ‘Williams Hill' vineyard at Blacks Avenue just a few minutes drive away from his own site. Here are my reviews of the 2011 red wines, from what is generally perceived as a difficult vintage. Kirk has produced two elegant wines with lively fruit definition and accessibility. www.georgesroadwines.co.nz

FEATURED WINES IN THIS REVIEW

Georges Road ‘Williams Hill' Waipara Pinot Noir 2011

Pinot Noir from New Zealand – Canterbury & Waipara

17.5-/20

Clones 5, 115, 667 and 777 from ‘Williams Hill' vineyard on Blacks Avenue, the fruit fully destemmed but not crushed, ambient soaked and indigenous yeast fermented to 13.9% alc., the wine given 35 days on skins. The wine was aged 12 months in 2 and 3 y.o. French oak barrels. Dark, deep ruby-red colour with good depth. The bouquet is elegant and well-proportioned showing bright red berry fruit aromas, with nuances of dried herbs and mushrooms adding some interest. Medium-bodied, this has fresh red berry fruit flavours intermixed with mushroom and spicy herb notes underlined by fine grainy tannins and fresh, near-racy acidity. The palate has a fine, sinewy texture and line, with moderate depth. The fruit unfolds to reveal good richness and sweetness that leads to an attractive, long finish of sweet red florals and delicate spiciness. This is an elegant, cooler-spectrum, textured Pinot Noir that reveals a pretty lusciousness in the glass. Match with poultry and pork dishes over the next 4-5+ years. 17.5-/20 May 2012 RRP $26.50

Georges Road ‘Block One' Waipara Syrah 2011

Syrah from New Zealand – Canterbury & Waipara

17.5/20

Dark, deep, black-ruby colour with light purple hues on edge. This has a fresh and elegant nose of black fruits, violet-floral perfumes and white pepper, with subtle aromas of iron-earth, bacon and reduction. Medium-full bodied, this has moderately concentrated flavours of black berry fruits and plums, with notes of liquorice, dark spices, pepper and florals forming a good core. This is clean and has a fresh purity. The fruit is enlivened by racy acidity which contributes to a slippery mouthfeel. Fine, supple tannins provide support and the palate finishes with fresh acidity and gently sweet fruit notes. Drink this elegant, fresh and supple Syrah with Asian cuisine over the next 5-6+ years. MS clone fruit from ‘Georges Road' vineyard, hand-picked and fully destemmed but not crushes, ambient soaked and indigenous yeast fermented to 13.9% alc., the wine spending 38 days on skins.
