GeorgeTown Vineyard Rose 2011 & Pinot Noir 2009

14 August,2012

The GeorgeTown Vineyard label shot to fame when the 2007 Pinot Noir was awarded the Champion Exhibition Red Wine Trophy at the 2009 Air New Zealand Wine Awards. However the quantity of wine from the vineyard is tiny, as indicated by the ‘Exhibition' status of the trophy, reserved for limited production wines, with only of 50 dozen (two 225 litre barrels worth) needing to be available. Ian Dee and Marianne Sonner purchased the 1.5 ha vineyard at the entrance to the Kawarau Gorge, 6 km from Cromwell, because of its unique site with 7,100 close-planted Pinot Noir vines. The clones 777, 5, 667, 115 and 114 were planted by the late Gary Andrus in 2002, with the first vintage of GeorgeTown being the trophy winning 2007. Ian tends the vineyard which is now under organic regimes, and certification is the aim for the near future. The wine is made at Mount Edward with the assistance of Duncan Forsyth there, who takes some of the GeorgeTown fruit. www.georgetown.co.nz

GeorgeTown Vineyard Central Otago Pinot Rosé 2011

Rose from New Zealand – Otago

17/20

Purpose-grown Pinot Noir for the rosé style on a heavier soiled section of the ‘GeorgeTown' vineyard, given approx. 4 hours on skins and fermented to 13.5% alc. and 3 g/L rs. Light, peach-pink, ‘eye of the partridge' colour. The nose is softly full with savoury red floral, strawberry and cooked peach aromas along with some minerally nuances. Dry and moderately light-bodied, this has intense flavours of mineral-infused peaches and strawberries, the fruit showing good depth and a degree of lusciousness, balanced by fine, lacy acidity and a subtle textural thread. The flavours of strawberries and minerals are bright and lively, and carry through to a long, steely, crisply dry finish. This is a dry, minerally rosé with savoury interest to the pretty fruit. Serve with charcuterie and antipasto over the next 2+ years. 122 cases made. 17.0/20 Aug 2012 RRP $24.95

GeorgeTown Vineyard Central Otago Pinot Noir 2009

Pinot Noir from New Zealand – Otago

18.5-/20

Full, dark ruby-red colour with good depth, some youthful purple hues showing. This has a full, voluminous bouquet, packed with ripe, warm, dark berry and cherry aromas, revealing oak spices and nuances of secondary gamey development. Full-bodied, this is a fulsome and mouthfilling wine showing dark raspberry fruit flavours along with violetty florals and Asian spices. Solidly packed, the tannins are supple, but the underlying acidity provides good energy and liveliness. The wine has a full, rounded finish which flows smoothly, the dark fruit flavours long and sustained. This fulsome, ripe Pinot Noir is rounded and approachable now, but will keep 5-6+ years. Match with roasted red meat dishes. Predominantly clone 114 with smaller portions of 777, 5, 667 and 115, given a 5 day cold soak and indigenous yeast fermented with 17% whole bunches to 13.9% alc., the wine spending 20 days on skins and aged 11 months in 30% new French oak. 283 cases made. 18.5-/20 Aug 2012 RRP $44.95
