Greenhough New Release 2011 Whites and 2010 Pinot Noir

19 June,2012

In 1990, Andrew Greenhough and Jenny Wheeler took over the 4 ha Ranzau vineyard that was originally established at Hope on the Waimea Plains in 1976. Since then, they have expanded the plantings to 11 ha, replanting much of the old material and modernising the winery. However, the original ‘Hope' vineyard still retains Riesling, Pinot Noir and Pinot Blanc vines which are over 30 years old. Greenhough Wines also sources fruit from long-term growers, including the ‘Morison' vineyard, also in Hope, and the ‘Barraud' site in Upper Moutere. The ‘Hope Vineyard' wines demonstrate the single vineyard characteristics whereas the ‘Vineyards' range focusses on style. However, dedication to quality has seen both of the Greenhough ranges become leaders in the Nelson district. Here are reviews of a selection of the 2011 new release whites and the 2010 Pinot Noir. www.greenhough.co.nz

Greenhough Nelson Sauvignon Blanc 2011

Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand – Nelson

17.5-/20

Bright, pale straw-yellow colour with green hues. Softly full and voluminous on the nose, ripe capsicum aromas show with liveliness, unfolding fresh herb and gooseberry notes. Dry to taste, this is elegant and still tightly bound. Subtle, luscious capsicum and gooseberry flavours with delicate green bean notes are enlivened by brisk, racy acidity. The fruit forms a fine textural core which leads to a crisp, firmly dry finish with moderate length. This is an elegant and racy Sauvignon with some detailed fruit interest. Match with seafood, vegetables and salads as well as goats cheese over the next 2 years. Fruit from the ‘Greenhough' and ‘Morison' vineyards in Hope, fermented in tank, with 4% in new French oak by indigenous yeasts to 13.0% alc. and 3.4 g/L rs. 17.5-/20 Jun 2012 RRP $20.00

Greenhough Nelson Chardonnay 2011

Chardonnay from New Zealand – Nelson

16.5+/20

Clones 95 and Mendoza from the ‘Greenhough' and ‘Morison' vineyards in Hope, hand-picked and WBP. Fermentation initiated in tank then barrel-fermented in old oak to 13.7% alc. The wine was aged in oak for 5 months with regular batonnage, undergoing partial MLF. Pale straw-yellow colour, lighter on rim. The bouquet is very fine with bright, fresh, aromatic white peach and citrussy fruit notes along with some smoky, nutty elements. Dry and medium-bodied, tightly bound flavours of citrus fruit are intermixed with flint and mineral elements and some oak spice. The palate is driven by racy acidity, and is marked by energy and lively tension. The finish is moderately sustained with citrus and oak flavours showing. This is an elegant and slender Chardonnay with acid freshness featuring. Serve with creamy seafood dishes over the next 3-4+ years. 16.5+/20 Jun 2012 RRP $25.00

Greenhough ‘Hope Vineyard' Nelson Riesling 2011

Riesling from New Zealand – Nelson

19/20

From vines planted in 1976 and 1996, WBP and stainless-steel fermented to 12.5% alc. and 9 g/L rs. Very pale straw colour with slight green hues, near colourless, this has a very fine, pure and tightly bound nose with subtle citrus fruits and distinct mineral notes, the aromatic showing great clarity. Dry to taste, this is a wine of great elegance, with very fine lime-like fruit definition, the acidity very refined and not intrusive, and in harmony with the smooth mouthfeel. Delicacy and linearity abound, and minerality exemplified. This should age with grace over the next 5-6+ years easily. 19.0/20 Feb 2013

Pale straw-yellow colour with light green hues. This has a bright bouquet of apples, limes, herbs and minerals complexed with detailed steely nuances. There is depth with poise in the aromatic presentation. Dryish to taste, delicate flavours of limes and lemon unfold to reveal mineral, white floral and herb notes. The acidity is discreet and harmonious, adding to the refined mouthfeel. There is an ethereal nature, but there is good underlying concentration forming an excellent palate line and presence. The finish is very long, with subtle, nuanced floral flavours. This is an elegant, detailed, dry Riesling with finesse allied to concentration. Serve as an aperitif, with delicate seafood dishes and Asian cuisine over the next 5-6 years. ‘Hope Vineyard' fruit, the wine made predominantly from vines planted in 1976, hand-picked and WBP, cool-fermented to 12.5% alc. and 9 g/L rs. BioGro certified organic. 18.5/20 Jun 2012 RRP $24.00

Greenhough ‘Apple Valley' Nelson Riesling 2011

Riesling from New Zealand – Nelson

18-/20

Fruit from the ‘Barraud' vineyard, Upper Moutere, WBP and cool-fermented to 8% alc. and 45 g/L rs. Bright, very pale straw colour with some green hues. This has a very delicate, fine and subtle nose of white stonefruits, lime and minerals. Medium in sweetness, light flavours of limes and florals show with a degree of lusciousness. The fruit is framed in a mouthwatering palate with lacy acidity which contributes a little sweet and sour edge. The acidity drives the palate, with the sweetness building, providing depth and line. A little textural thread shows on the finish with both acidity and a little hint of honey adding interest. This thirst-quenching and racy medium-sweet Riesling has the delicacy to match Thai, Japanese and Vietnamese cuisine over the next 4-5+ years. 18.0-/20 Jun 2012 RRP $22.00

Greenhough Nelson Pinot Noir 2010

Pinot Noir from New Zealand – Nelson

17.5-/20

Soft ruby-red colour with some garnet hues. The nose is light and reserved but grows to show good intensity of spiced red cherry fruit aromas along with raspberry essence and the beginnings of secondary dried herb elements. Medium-bodied, rich and lush dark cherry and berry fruit flavours are intermixed with herb and spice notes that are a feature. The fruit has richness, enlivened by fresh acidity and balanced by fine-grained tannins. The flavours are mouthfilling and detailed by some secondary, savoury interest which is carried through to an ethereal, soft finish. Though shy on bouquet, this Pinot Noir has good richness and mouthfeel, and beginning to develop some savoury interest. Match with Mediterranean-inspired red meat dishes over the next 4-5 years. Clones 5, 10/5, 22, 777, 667, 115 and Abel from two sites in Hope and two in the Upper Moutere, fully destemmed, given an ambient soak and partially indigenous yeast fermented to 13.6% alc. The wine spent up to 24 days on skins, and was aged 12 months in French barriques and puncheons. 17.5-/20 Jun 2012 RRP $27.00
