‘H' Martinborough Merlot/Cabernet 2008 and 2009

17 July,2012
When Bill Benfield and Sue Delamare made their last wine in 2006, Martinborough lost one of its more iconclastic wines. Their Bordeaux-varietal based wine, though first made in the early days in 1989, became regarded as unusual in a Pinot Noir dominated region. However the spirit and fruit lives on. Hiroyuki Kusuda made a wine from Benfield & Delamare fruit in 2008, and the Benfield & Delamare fruit continues also in Heather Simpson's ‘H' wines. Heather bought the Oxford Street property belonging to Bill Benfield and Sue Delamare in 2008, and also purchased grapes from their other property on the corner of Cambridge Road and New York Street. Bill Benfield made the ‘H' wine in 2008, and Heather made the 2009 wine with Bill's guidance. Heather supervises all the viticultural work. H Martinborough Merlot/Cabernet Sauvignon 2008

Merlot from New Zealand – Wairarapa & Wellington

15.5/20

Merlot and Cabernet fruit from Oxford Street supplemented with fruit from Benfield & Delamare, fermented to 13.5% alc., wine aged in 17% new French oak. Full, deep ruby-red colour with some black hues and garnet on edge. The nose is soft, easy and accessible with aromas of cool-spectrum redcurrant and red plum fruits along with herbal nuances. Medium-bodied, light flavours of dark red curranty fruit are expressed with savoury, earth elements. Some secondary dried herb notes show. This is moderately extracted, and along with the acidity, provides a dry texture and mouthfeel underlining the fruit. The finish features earthy Merlot fruit with acid brightness. This is a lighter Merlot-based wine with some secondary development. Match with casseroles and semi-firm cheeses over the next 3-4+ years. 15.5/20 Jul 2012 RRP $24.99

H Martinborough Merlot/Cabernet Sauvignon 2009

Merlot from New Zealand – Wairarapa & Wellington

16.5+/20
Very full, deep, black-hued ruby-red colour with some purple hues on rim. This has a full, soft nose of inky black berry and plum aromas along with gentle, savoury herb notes, forming a bouquet with good concentration. Medium-bodied, this has moderately rich fruit flavours of red currants and earthy plum and tobacco, with earthy nuances. The wine has a liveliness and lusciousness providing energy and drive. Elegant in proportion, the palate is underlined by grainy tannins which carry through to a minty flavoured, dry finish with good length. This medium-bodied, elegant Bordeaux-styled red has the liveliness and grip to match with herb-encrusted lamb and beef dishes over the next 4-5+ years. Merlot and Cabernet fruit from Oxford Street supplemented with fruit from Benfield & Delamare, fermented to 13.5% alc., wine aged in seasoned French oak. 16.5+/20 Jul 2012 RRP $24.95
