Instinct Hawke's Bay Syrah 2011

14 August,2012

The Instinct range of wines from CJ Pask has enabled Kate Radburnd and her team to craft wines with varietals grown outside the Hawke's Bay, thus preserving the integrity of Hawke's Bay provenance for the CJ Pask brand, but also allowing the company work with a broader range of wine styles. Invariably the Instinct wines have a sense of fun and approachability. The challenging 2011 vintage required a sensitive hand to retain the best features of the Syrah fruit without over extraction which would result in harshness or green characters. www.cjpaskwinery.co.nz

Instinct Hawke's Bay Syrah 2011

Syrah from New Zealand – Hawke’s Bay

15.5+/20

Moderately deep, light ruby-red colour with garnet hues. This has an intensely aromatic, piquant nose of white pepper, spices and fragrant red berry fruit. Light-bodied, the palate features bright fruit flavours of redcurrant, white pepper and fresh herbs forming a good core supported with soft, supple tannins and fresh acidity. While softly textured, this has a good palate line with the drive to carry spice, floral and peppery flavours to a moderately sustained dry finish. This is a light-bodied Pinot Noir-like Syrah with distinctive white pepper notes. Serve with charcuterie, pizza and barbecued foods over the next 2-3+ years. 100% Syrah fruit from the Gimblett Gravels fermented to 12.5% alc., the wine aged 9 months in new and seasoned French oak. 15.5+/20 Aug 2012 RRP $22.50
