Kaimira Estate Brightwater Sauvignon Blanc 2016

13 November,2018

Ian Miller and June Hamilton operate Kaimira Estate in Brightwater, Nelson. They own over 26 ha of vineyard over three sites, the 6 ha ‘River Terrace’, 10 ha ‘Winery Block’ and 10.5 ha ‘Livingston Road’ sites, these certified AsureQuality organic since 2013. The first plantings were in 1997 and continued to 2006, the expansion culminating in the building of a new winery in 2007. There are 13 varieties planted, and the range of wines under the ‘Kaimira Estate’ and ‘Brightside’ ranges made by the very experienced Shayne Cox is very broad. Here I review the 2016 Kaimira Brightwater Sauvignon Blanc. www.kaimirawines.com

Kaimira Brightwater Sauvignon Blanc 2016

Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand – Nelson

Bright, even straw-yellow colour with lemon-green hues, paler on the edge. The nose is elegant in proportion with a fine, well-bound core of green stonefruits with subtle notes of gooseberries, herbs and nuances of earth and minerals. This is beginning to show secondary development, but retains very good freshness. Dry to taste and medium-bodied, the palate has a well-concentrated core with harmoniously packed and integrated flavours of green stonefruits, hints of gooseberries and herbs, and some secondary earthiness. The palate has good intensity and drive, and the mouthfeel is enlivened by balanced, lacy acidity. The wine flows with good energy to an elegant, lingering finish. This is a finely concentrated Sauvignon Blanc with stonefruit, gooseberry and herb flavours along with integrated bottle-aged earthy notes emerging, on a palate with directness and linearity. Match with seafood and Mediterranean fare over the next 2 years. Fruit from 8 y.o. vines, fermented in stainless-steel with 10% in hogshead barrels by indigenous yeasts to 13.5% alc. and 4.2 g/L RS, the wine given lees contact. 17.5/20 Nov 2018 RRP $21.00
