Lamont Central Otago 2017 Pinot Gris, 2016 Riesling, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir

Craig and Angela Gasson’s Central Otago ‘Lamont Wines’ brand has grown significantly since they took it over from the McLaughlin family who based the wines on their Bendigo site planted in 1999. Craig was there at the start, working to establish the vineyard. Following a viticultural and winemaking sojourn overseas, Craig returned to take the opportunity of controlling the ‘Lamont’ brand which he and his wife now own. Craig and Angela have introduced Chardonnay to add to their Pinot Gris, Riesling and Pinot Noir, and now source from their new ‘Chinamans’ site as well as the ‘Home’ block at the start of Loop Road. New are the ‘North Face’ and ‘Zola’ vineyards, planted in 2017, and yet to bear fruit. Almost all of the Lamont fruit sources are in Bendigo, and that from the ‘Home’ block is certified BioGro organic. In addition to the premium wines, there is a more accessible ‘Therapy’ range. Craig personally tends to the viticulture and is fully involved in the winemaking, which is carried out at the Peregrine facility. The ‘Lamont’ brand is poised for further growth. Here I review the new release 2017 Pinot Gris, and 2016 Riesling, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.


Lamont Bendigo Central Otago Pinot Gris 2017

Pinot Gris from New Zealand – Otago


Bright, light golden-yellow colour with a suggestion of blush and some depth, lighter edged. The nose is fresh and full with well-packed aromas of ripe yellow stonefruits entwined with exotic florals along with an amalgam of pear fruit and some fresh fermentation esters. The aromatics show good depth and grows in volume with aeration. Dryish to taste and medium-full bodied, the palate has rich and succulent fruit flavours of yellow stonefruits and pears, with exotic frloral fragrances, some honeysuckle and a little esters lift. The palate is lively with good fruit weight and presence, and soft, lacy acidity balancing the near unctuousness and alcoholic power. The flavours carry to a long, aromatic finish. This is a rich fruited dry Pinot Gris with good weight and flavours of stonefruits, florals, pears and honeysuckle. Match with Asian and Middle Eastern fare over the next 4 years. Hand-picked fruit, clones Sel Ovaille and 2/15, from Bendigo, WBP and cool-fermented in stainless-steel with 10% in seasoned oak to 13.8% alc. and 3 g/L RS. Lamont Bendigo Central Otago Riesling 2016

Riesling from New Zealand – Otago


Bright, pale straw-yellow colour with slight green hues. The nose is firmly concentrated and intense with a strong core of lime fruit melded with suggestions of minerals and toast, unfolding white floral elements. This has depth and intensity, and is refreshing and mouthwatering. Dry to taste and medium-bodied, the palate has a concentrated and firm core of lime and lemon fruit along with subtle notes of toast, minerals, white florals and honeysuckle. The palate line is smooth-flowing with fresh acidity adding to the liveliness and drive. The wine carries to a long, rich finish with is beginning to soften. This is a rich and firmly concentrated dry Riesling with intense flavours of limes and lemons, with toast and mouthwatering minerals, plus white floralson an energised palate line. Serve as an aperitif, with seafood and Asian fare over the next 5 years. Hand-picked fruit, clone GM110, from Bendigo, WBP and cool-fermented in stainless-steel to 11.7% alc. and 5.5 g/L RS, TA 8.6 g/L and pH 2.8. Lamont Central Otago Chardonnay 2016

Chardonnay from New Zealand – Otago


Bright, light golden-hued yellow colour with some depth, and lemon-green tints on the edge. The nose is soft and broad with gently voluminous aromas of ripe yellow stonefruits and citrus fruit melded with creamy barrel-ferment and subtle nutty oak, along with lemon-curd and butterscotch MLF, unveiling piquant mineral notes. Medium-full bodied, the palate has softly rich and luscious flavours of ripe yellow stonefruits, citrus fruit and tropical fruit entwined with creamy barrel-ferment and a rich layering of lemon-curd and buttery MLF. The palate has mouthfilling flavours with a degree of opulence, lending roundness and accessibility. The wine carries with richness to a lingering finish of creamy, nutty oak and MLF. This is a rich, mouthfilling Chardonnay with up-front flavours of stonefruit and tropical fruit with creamy oak and a layering of butterscotch MLF. Match with roast pork over the next 4 years. Hand-picked fruit, clones Mendoza and 6 from the ‘Penniket’ ‘Minaret Peaks’ vineyard, Lake Wanaka WBP and fully barrel-fermented to 14.0% alc., the wine aged 11 months in 25% new French oak barrels with 100% MLF. 18.0/20 Jul 2018 RRP $32.00

Lamont Bendigo Central Otago Pinot Noir 2016

Pinot Noir from New Zealand – Otago


Deep ruby-red colour, a little lighter in the edge. The nose is fresh with good depth and firm aromas of ripe, dark-red and black cherry fruit along with an amalgam of fresh and dark herbs, liquorice and a suggestion of complexing whole bunch stalk notes, unfolding dark-red florals. Medium-full bodied, the palate is fulsome with mouthfilling flavours of ripe black cherry fruit harmoniously entwined with dark herbs, liquorice and earth elements. The fruit forms a firm line with grainy tannin extraction providing plenty of structure. The wine flows with good energy from the fresh acidity, and the wine carries to an elegant, sustained finish. This is a youthfully fresh, black cherry fruited Pinot Noir with herb and liquorice detail on a mouthfilling palate with a firm core and plenty of structure. Match with lamb, beef and venison over the next 6-8 years. Hand-picked fruit, clones 667, 777. Abel and 115, from Bendigo, fermented with a portion of whole bunches to 13.5% alc., the wine aged 11 months in 25% new French oak barriques. Certified organic fruit. 450 cases made. 18.0+/20 Jul 2018 RRP $45.00
