Lamont Central Otago 2018 Pinot Rosé and Pinot Gris, and 2017 Chardonnay

06 December,2018

Craig Gasson is a winegrower who never rests! He has developed his ‘Lamont’ Central Otago brand fastidiously, and has ensured his wines are of the best quality possible. Pinot Noir is his focus, but he has made some wonderful Riesling and Pinot Gris releases over the years. My previous reviews of Craig’s wines in July yielded 5-stars for his 2017 Pinot Gris and 2016 Riesling, with the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir close to the 5-star threshold (click here to see my reviews). While almost all of his wine comes from Bendigo sites including that he helped plant for the McLaughlin family in 1999 and nurtured since, Craig has sourced fruit from other sites in the region to broaden his range. Here, I review the 2018 Pinot Noir Rosé and Pinot Gris from Bendigo fruit, and 2017 Chardonnay from Wanaka grapes. www.lamont.co.nz

Lamont Bendigo Central Otago Pinot Noir Rosé 2018

Rose from New Zealand – Otago

18/20

Bright, pale cerise-pink colour with some depth, a little lighter on the rim. The nose is elegant and refreshing with aromas of strawberries and raspberries and cream with lifted red florals and a little confectionary, unfolding thirst-quenching mineral elements. Dryish to taste and medium-full bodied, the palate has bright, sweetly rich and luscious flavours of strawberries and raspberries and cream, with attractive, fragrant red florals entwined with lifted confectionary notes. The mouthfeel is lively with fresh acidity and the wine flows along a very fine-textured line with good drive, carrying to a sweet, aromatic finish. This is a bright, juicy and luscious strawberry and raspberry-fruited dryish rosé with floral and confectionary lift on a fresh palate. Serve with tapas and Asian fare over the next 2 years. Clones 777 and 667 from Chinamans Terrace, the fruit hand-picked, given 2 days skin contact, and cool-fermented to 13.7% alc. and 5.37 g/L RS. 250 cases made. 18.0/20 Dec 2018 RRP $27.00

Lamont Bendigo Central Otago Pinot Gris 2018

Pinot Gris from New Zealand – Otago

18+/20

Bright, light straw-yellow colour, near colourless on the rim. The nose is elegantly proportioned with taut and finely packed aromas of white stonefruits and florals melded with soft nutty and mineral elements. The florals open up and the stonefruit and pear flavours intensify with aeration. Dry to taste and medium-full bodied, the palate has a fine, well-concentrated core of white and yellow stonefruits along with subtle notes of exotic florals and pears, entwined with subtle notes of exotic florals and pears, with nutty and mineral hints. The fruit has richness and is balanced by softly drying phenolic textures with integrated acidity, and the wine leads to a dry-textured finish. Brilliant, pale golden-yellow colour with lemon hues and some depth, a little lighter on the rim. The nose is finely proportioned with a core of white stonefruits along with hints of citrus fruit melded with a layer of nutty lees elements and subtle wet-stone minerality. This is fresh and mouth-watering.
