Locharburn Pinot Gris 2011 & Pinot Noir 2010

06 July,2012
The 14 ha ‘Locharburn' vineyard of Chris and Jenny Hill is becoming defined in the wines that are being made from this site on terraces above Lowburn at Lake Dunstan, near Cromwell. The wines certainly show restraint when young, and take their time to open up. But on the way, they blossom and show the intricate detail and minerality that the more refined wines of Central Otago can show. These are the classical styles that serious wine enthusiasts deserve. Highly respected winemaker Carol Bunn, who has made the wines from the start has now scaled back her winemaking consultancy and relinquished the Locharburn winemaking, handing it over to the equally respected Jen Parr at the Terra Sancta facility at Bannockburn as of the 2012 vintage. We should see the continued realisation of the Locharburn site's potential. Here are my reviews of the newly released Pinot Gris 2011 and the yet-to-be-released Pinot Noir 2010. www.locharburnwines.co.nz

Locharburn Central Otago Pinot Gris 2011

Pinot Gris from New Zealand – Otago

17.5/20

Bright, very pale straw-yellow colour with slight green hues. This has a very fine and intense nose with real presence, showing pure aromas of white stonefruits, pears and a little honeysuckle. Dry to taste, elegantly presented and delicate flavours of stonefruits, white florals and pears are enriched by subtle luscious notes. The palate has excellent drive with substance, concentration, and rounded textures, balanced by good acidity that leads to a crisp, dry finish with nuances of pears and honey. This is an elegant Pinot Gris with good presence and fine textures. Match with Asian cuisine over the next 3-4+ years. Larcombe and 2/15 clone fruit 75% WBP, the remainder destemmed and given skin contact. 70% was fermented in stainless-steel, the remainder in oak punches, of which 10% were new), to 14.0% alc. and 5 g/L rs. 17.5/20 Jul 2012 RRP $26.00

Locharburn Central Otago Pinot Noir 2010

Pinot Noir from New Zealand – Otago

18+/20

Clones 5, 777 and 667 from 10 y.o. vines, hand-picked and destemmed, given a cold soak and fermented to 14.0% alc., the wine aged 8 months in 30% new French oak barrels. Full, very deep, purple-hued black-red colour, youthful in appearance. Tightly bound and proportioned aromas of fresh, ripe dark berry and cherry fruits grow in intensity in the glass, revealing a minerally aspect. Medium-bodied, fine-grained tannins that form a firm framework are the feature on the palate. Ripe dark berry fruits with black and violetty florals and minerals unfold from a concentrated core, and are enhanced by good acidity. The structure is taut and provides a dry mouthfeel, but the building nuances of fruit flavours combine with attractive spice and oak notes on a long and sustained finish, promising more to be revealed. This is a tightly bound, refined and firmly structured Pinot Noir that will develop well over the next 5-7+ years, over which time it should merit a higher rating. Match with roasted and grilled red meat dishes and firm cheeses. 18.0+/20 Jul 2012 RRP $33.50
