Main Divide – Select Southern Wine

30 March,2012
The Main Divide label was born out of the availability of quality fruit from growers around the South Island that the Pegasus Bay winery used in making wines distinct from those made only from estate Waipara fruit. ‘Main Divide' refers to the Southern Alps mountain range forming the backbone of the South Island of New Zealand. Winemakers Matt Donaldson and Lynette Hudson have the same approach with the Main Divide wines as with Pegasus Bay of natural winemaking with minimal intervention, to represent the character of each vineyard site or area from where the fruit is sourced. They have a rich and flavoursome consumer-friendly style. The popularity of the wines has seen the brand grow well beyond a ‘second tier' status, and the breadth of the range and the high quality confirms this. www.maindivide.com

Main Divide Waipara Valley Pinot Gris 2011

Pinot Gris from New Zealand – Canterbury & Waipara

18.5-/20

100% Pinot Gris from the Waipara Valley with a small portion of botrytis infection, cool-fermented, a small percentage in old oak to 13.7% alc. and 18.3 g/L rs. The wine was given lees contact. Brilliant, even straw-yellow colour with a light golden hue. The bouquet is funky and complex with bold aromatics of ripe yellow stonefruits and honey interwoven with flinty reduction. Medium in sweetness, the palate is soft, full and lush, with succulent flavours of ripe stonefruits and spiced pears, interwoven with layers of flinty sulphides. This is warm and rich, the alcohol adding to the generous flavours, and low acidity enhances the breadth and accessibility. A rich, long and unctuous finish completes the wine. This is a rich and layered, funky-flavoured Pinot Gris in a modern Alsace style. Match with pate and rich Mediterranean-inspired food over the next 3-4 years. 18.5-/20 Mar 2012 RRP $19.95

Main Divide Waipara Valley Riesling 2010

Riesling from New Zealand – Canterbury & Waipara

18+/20

Brilliant straw-yellow colour, pale on rim. This is softly full and quite up-front on bouquet, with aromas of yellow florals, lime and lemon zest, honey and exotic jasmine perfumes. Medium in sweetness, the flavours of citrus and tropical fruits, honey and spices are mouthfilling, the palate with a slight prickle of liveliness and brisk acidity. The freshness of the wine gives vitality to the open, soft textures. Fulsome flavours of florals and honey are the feature, and are carried on a long, dryish and concentrated finish. Waipara Valley fruit cool-fermented to 11.5% and 29.3 g/L rs. This is an open and flavoursome, crowd-pleasing Riesling with honey and jasmine flavours that will cellar another 3-5 years. Serve with spicy Middle Eastern and Asian foods. 18.0+/20 Mar 2012 RRP $19.95

Main Divide Canterbury Pinot Noir 2009

Pinot Noir from New Zealand – Canterbury & Waipara

18-/20

Dark ruby-red colour with good depth, somegarnet hues on rim. The nose is a little subdued, but showing ripe dark red berry fruits with savoury, mushroom and dark herb aromas, growing in waves of secondary spice and game interest. Medium-full bodied, soft mouthfilling flavours flow with an array of interest and interaction. Dark red berry fruits, forest-floor earth and herbs, spices and cedar are woven together, and supported by supple tannins and some good acidity, resulting in an even, plush texture and gentle, smooth finish. This is a soft, supple Pinot Noir with a layered amalgam of sweet and savoury flavours. Match with casseroles and slow-cooked meat dishes over the next 3-4+ years. Fruit destemmed and indigenous yeast fermented to 14.0% alc., the wine aged 18 months in French oak barriques. 18.0-/20 Mar 2012 RRP $24.95
