Maude – A Taste of Burgundy in Wanaka

05 July,2012
Sarah-Kate and Dan Dineen have brought a wealth of experience to Wanaka and Central Otago, and their Maude wines are growing in repute, supporting and consolidating the work done by the nearby Mills family at Rippon Vineyard. The Dineens and the Maude winery have been sought after for winemaking expertise and the facilities available. But Sarah-Kate and Dan's primary focus is on their Maude wines which are based on fruit from the various sub-regions of Central Otago, and the special ‘Mount Maude' wines made from fruit from Sarah-Kate's 4 ha family vineyard at Maungawera Valley, Wanaka. The burgundian Chardonnay and Pinot Noir varieties feature in this site and the wines are a taste of Burgundy from Wanaka, and indicate how Sarah-Kate and Dan are growing in confidence, and making noteworthy wines. www.maudewines.com

Maude ‘Mt Maude Vineyard' Central Otago ‘Reserve' Chardonnay 2011

Chardonnay from New Zealand – Otago

18+/20

Bright. Pale-straw yellow colour, with some pale green hues. The bouquet is light with subtle aromas of white and yellow stonefruits and citrus fruits, intermingling with mineral and chalky notes, along with nuts and oak. Medium-full bodied, rich and concentrated citrus fruit flavours feature with pronounced acidity, all moderated by creamy barrel-ferment textures and spicy, nutty oak elements. While rich and deeply packed, this has excellent drive from the bright acidity which carries through to a very long and sustained finish, still tightly bound with citrussy fruit and oak toast. Still closed on nose, this is rich, racy and concentrated with excellent creamy mouthfeel showing the fruit depth. This could be a Corton-Charlemagne style. Match with roasted, grilled and pan-fried seafood over the next 4-6 years. Mendoza and clone 6 fruit from 17 y.o. vines from the ‘Mt Maude' site, fermented in seasoned puncheons to 13.5% alc., the wine aged 9 months in oak. 210 dozen made. 18.0+/20 Jul 2012 RRP $24.00

Maude Central Otago Pinot Noir 2010

Pinot Noir from New Zealand – Otago

18+/20

Dark, deep, ruby-red colour with a purple hue on edge. This has a soft, restrained, but densely packed nose with complex aromas of black berry and cherry fruits that reveal forest-floor and earthy nuances. Full-bodied, the flavours are a little reserved, showing dark red berry fruits with hints of undergrowth, mushrooms and earth as well as dark herbs. There is good richness and fruit sweetness, enhanced by good acidity, and the palate has depth and presence, filling the mouth with vitality. The tannin extraction is very balanced and unobtrusive in support, and the wine finishes with long nuances of dark red florals and spices. This is a richly packed Pinot Noir with an underlying liveliness, and the complex flavours to match game meat dishes over the next 5-7 years. Clones 115, 5, Abel, 777, 10/5 and 667 fruit, 35% from Gibbston and Queensbury each, and 15% from Bannockburn and the ‘Mt Maude' site in Wanaka, indigenous yeasted fermented with a portion whole bunch to 14.0% alc., the wine aged 8 months in 30% new French oak. 1,400 dozen made. This is in the hearty Beaune style. 18.0+/20 Jul 2012 RRP $32.00

Maude ‘Mt Maude Vineyard' Central Otago ‘Reserve' Pinot Noir 2010

Pinot Noir from New Zealand – Otago

19-/20

10/5 clone fruit from 16 y.o. vines from the ‘Mt Maude' site, hand-picked and indigenous yeast fermented with 60% whole bunch to 14.0% alc. The wine spent 3 weeks in skins and was aged 9 months maturation in 50% new French oak barriques, followed by a further 8 months in 1 y.o. barrels. Full, deep, purple-hued ruby-red colour, youthful in appearance. Soft, full and broad on bouquet, this possesses complex layers of dark berry fruits with detailed nuances of dark herbs, earth and violetty florals that reveal more in the glass. Full-bodied, rich and lush flavours of berry fruits are interwoven with layers of herbs, spices and oak. The palate is well-structured with a powerful tannin framework and fresh acid cut, providing tension and energy. This has a fine, firm drive with excellent textural presence, leading to a long finish of plum, liquorice and spice nuances. This complex-flavoured and well-structured Pinot Noir will be a match with pork, veal and lamb over the next 7-9+ years. Think of Gevrey-Chambertin. 239 dozen made. 19.0/20 Jul 2012 RRP $50.00
