McGuigan ‘Classic' Shiraz 2011

22 June,2012
The McGuigan family is one of the greats in the Hunter Valley and Australia. Owen McGuigan, born in 1869, was a dairy farmer who supplemented his income by working in local vineyards, a tradition carried on by his son Perce. Owen's grandson Brian established McGuigan as a stand-alone brand, and this has grown to be one of the strongest in the Australian industry today, with a production of millions of cases. The company draws fruit from a wide variety of sources and has wineries in the Hunter Valley and the Barossa. There are ranges of McGuigan wines for all niches, the ‘McGuigan Classic' wines designed for traditional liquor, to avoid competition with supermarkets and are populist, offering value. I see the Shiraz as the best of the ‘Classic' tier. www.mcguiganwines.com.au The brand is distributed by EuroVintage in New Zealand. www.eurovintage.co.nz

McGuigan ‘Classic' South Eastern Australia Shiraz 2011

Syrah from Australia - Other

15.5-/20

Fruit from various vineyards in South Eastern Australia fermented to 12.5% alc., the wine given some oak maturation. Ruby-red colour with purple hues, light on rim. This has a soft, light and up-front nose with aromas of dark plums and liquorice along with some earth, pepper and spices. Medium-full bodied, this has penetrating flavours of dark plum fruit with spicy raspberries showing some sweetness and lusciousness. Modest tannins provide some grip and palate definition, and with balanced acidity, matches the slight sweetness on the moderately long finish. This is a moderately rich Shiraz enhanced by a little sweetness, the textures enabling it to match Middle Eastern fare and barbecued red meats over the next 2-3+ years. 15.5-/20 Jun 2012 RRP $15.99
