The Miles From Nowhere wines from the Margaret River are distributed in New Zealand by 3 Wine Men NZ, and are part of a portfolio that includes Central Otago Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir, as well as wines from Castelnau Champagne, Argentina and Spain. 3 Wine Men is fronted by John Davies, an experienced wine industry operator, and the company is based in Christchurch. Miles From Nowhere is owned by Heather and Franklin Tate who have two sites in Cowarumup. Here, I review the new 2016 Miles From Nowhere Cabernet/Merlot and Shiraz. www.3winemen.com

Miles From Nowhere Margaret River Cabernet/Merlot 2016

Blended Red from Australia – Western Australia

Dark, deep, black-hued red colour, a little lighter edged. The nose is softly concentrated with good depth of ripe blackcurrant and blackberry fruit with black plum aromas, harmoniously integrated with nuances of mint, dark herbs and menthol elements. Medium-full bodied, the flavours of ripe blackcurrants, blackberries and plums form a soft and rounded core. Soft notes of herbs, mint and eucalyptus emerge. The fruit is underlined by soft, fine-grained tannin extraction with ripe acidity enhancing the approachability. Some alcohol drive underlines the palate as it flows to a lingering finish. This is a soft, rounded and harmonious, approachable Cabernet/Merlot with blasckcurrant, blackberry and plum fruit with mint and eucalypt notes Serve with roasted and barbecued lamb and beef dishes over the next 3-4 years. A blend of 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 39% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot and 2% Shiraz, fermented to 14.5% alc., a portion of the wine aged in predominantly French oak. 17.0+/20 Feb 2018 RRP $19.95

Syrah from Australia – Western Australia

Dark, deep, black-hued red colour, lighter on the rim. This has an elegant and stylishly restrained nose with aromas of ripe blackberries and dark raspberries with suggestions of black pepper, spices and some eucalypt. This is uncomplicated and very accessible. Medium-full bodied, the palate has rich and sweetly ripe fruit flavours of blackcurrants and dark raspberries along with notes of pepper and spice and a little liquorice, entwined with subtle eucalyptus nuances. The fruit is balanced by light, grainy tannin structure with integrated acidity. The fruit sweetness carries easily to a lingering spicy and juicy finish. This is a rich, juicy and sweet-fruited Shiraz with blackberry and raspberry fruit on a light, grainy-textured palate. Match with barbecued fare and Asian or Middle Eastern cuisine over the next 3+ years. 100% Shiraz fermented to 14.5% alc., the wine aged 12 months in American and French oak. 17.0-/20 Feb 2018 RRP $19.95
