Mills Reef ‘Elspeth' ‘Trust' Syrah 2010

13 August,2012

Mills Reef can lay claim to fame for their wines from different perspectives. Seen primarily as a Hawke's Bay producer with an emphasis on wines sourced from Gimblett Gravels fruit, it is one of a band of wineries that are releasing wines of excellent structure and ageworthiness. As a red Bordeaux-variety based company, its output of varietal wines and blended wines from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Malbec has been extremely highly regarded and consistently successful. However, Mills Reef is currently on a high with its Syrah wines. Just two months ago, the ‘Elspeth' Syrah 2010 was awarded the 2012 N.Z. Syrah Trophy at the IWC in London, this being a strong international endorsement of the label. This wine was made from fruit from the ‘Mere Road' vineyard. The release of the ‘Trust Vineyard' wines which include a Syrah is yet another angle that makes Mills Reef always interesting. The ‘Trust' vineyard is a 4 ha site on the corner of S.H. 50 and Mere Road, close-planted at 6,300 vines per ha with 80% Syrah and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon. Though young vines, the results have been impressive. Paddy Preston makes the final call on the style of the wines, enjoying the more aromatic and accessible nature the site imparts. Here is my review of the 2010 ‘Trust' Syrah. www.millsreef.co.nz

Mills Reef ‘Elspeth' ‘Trust Vineyard' Gimblett Gravels Hawke's Bay Syrah 2010

Syrah from New Zealand – Hawke’s Bay

18.5-/20

Very dark, deep, purple-hued ruby-red colour, lighter on rim, youthful in appearance. This has an elegant, soft and ethereal bouquet of red berry fruits with red florals, along with white and black pepper and spicy oak, all well-integrated and expressed with harmony. Medium-bodied, dark berry and red floral fruit flavours laced with pepper gently build on a smooth, near seamlessly textured palate. The tannin extraction is very fine, and the acidity soft, allowing the sweet fruit flavours to feature and blossom in mid-palate. The wine finishes more elegantly, with subtle floral and oak spice notes showing good length. This is a very refined and smooth textured, elegant Syrah with floral and spices that blossom in the glass. Match with Asian and Middle Eastern cuisine over the next 5-6 years. Hand-picked fruit from the ‘trust' vineyard, destemmed and given a cold soak and indigenous yeast fermented in ‘Integrale' barrels to 13.5% alc., the wine aged 15 months in 300 L oak hogsheads, 45% French and 55% American of which two-thirds was new. 18.5-/20 Aug 2012 RRP $45.00
