Millton – Crazy by Nature

30 July,2012

The ‘Crazy by Nature' brand of The Millton Vineyard is very apt. James Millton rightly points out the irony that when he and Annie took the path of organic grape growing in 1984, they were deemed ‘crazies' by many conventional growers, winemakers and drinking public. Now, over a quarter of a century later, organic and biodynamic grape-growing is seen by many throughout the world as the only way of growing grapes in harmony with the environment, to make top wine. Tongue in cheek for sure, the label is fun and adorned with seemingly mystical symbols that are related to the philosophies that James and Annie Millton adhere to. www.millton.co.nz

Millton ‘Crazy by Nature' Shotberry' Gisborne Chardonnay 2011

Chardonnay from New Zealand – Gisborne

17+/20

Named after the intense little grapes of Mendoza clone Chardonnay. Certified organic and biodynamic fruit from the ‘Riverpoint' and ‘Opou' vineyards fermented to 13.0% alc., the wine given light oaking. Full, bright, straw-yellow with light golden hues. The nose full with bright and vibrant ripe, yellow stonefruit aromas, with notes of butterscotch MLF and subtle oak. Medium-bodied, there are concentrated, up-front flavours of stonefruits expressed with good richness and without complication, with some nuances of butter and nuts emerging in the glass. Good acidity enhances the fruit-driven nature and there is a soft creaminess to the texture, providing a lively, fresh mouthfeel. This is a fruit-forward Chardonnay with accessible textures and some detailed nuances. Serve with antipasto, pasta and white meat dishes over the next 2-3+ years. 17.0+/20 Jul 2012 RRP $20.00

Millton ‘Crazy by Nature' ‘Cosmo Red' Gisborne 2011

Blended Red from New Zealand – Gisborne

16.5/20

Dark, deep-hearted black-red colour with some purple hues. This has an intense and concentrated bouquet with an intriguing amalgam of black fruits, cracked black pepper and Asian spices, some liquorice and dark mint notes, lifted with violetty perfumes. Medium-bodied, distinctive flavours of black fruits and black pepper fill the palate. Spice and eucalypt elements are also present. The fruit is encased by fine, drying tannins with soft acidity contributing to a grainy finish. This is a veritable black peppered spice-box of a red wine that will match pizza, pasta and barbecued foods over the next 2-3+ years. A blend of Malbec, Syrah and Viognier, the fruit certified organic and grown biodynamically, fermented to 13.0% alc. 16.5/20 Jul 2012 RRP $24.00
