Molly Dooker ‘Girl on the Go’ McLaren Vale Sparkling Verdelho NV

Molly Dooker is the wine brand of Sarah and Sparky Marquis who have had over 25 years of winegrowing and making experience in the McLaren Vale. The brand was established in 2006 and the name is Australian slang for ‘left hander’ and refers to the fact that both Sarah and Sparky are left-handed. The winemaking and marketing is idiosyncratic, aimed to please the consumer, with wines that are big, ripe, sweet and mouthfilling. The opulence and hedonism of their wines have earned them many accolades and much critical acclaim, especially in the U.S. market. Here, I review a sparkling Verdelho which they describe as "intriguing” and "a sophisticated wine that’s not afraid to have fun”. www.mollydookerwines.com.au

Bright, light straw-yellow colour with some depth, lighter on the rim, with a moderately persistent, fine bubble. The bouquet is fresh with firm and tightly bound and delicate aromas of tropical fruit and exotic white stonefruits melded with subtly spicy, nutty oak and piquant herbal elements. The aromatic intensity grows in the glass, Dry to taste and medium-full bodied, this has a tightly packed and powerful palate with concentrated flavours of stonefruits and tropical fruits, spicy and nutty oak and herbal suggestions. The effervescence is crisp and adds to the firmness of line and concentration. Some underlying alcohol drive and lacy acidity provides energy and linearity, along with a mouthwatering edge to the mouthfeel. The alcohol and phenolics carry the wine to a zesty, lingering finish with exotic fruit nuances. This is a firm tight and well-driven Sparkling Verdelho with individual tropical fruit and spicy, nutty flavours. Serve with poultry, pork and veal over the next 2+ years. Verdelho fruit from the ‘Gemtree’ vineyard, two-thirds tank and one third barrel fermented and matured, the oak 67% American and 33% French, all new, the wine undergoing secondary fermentation to 14.0% alc. and 7.3 g/L RS.
