Mondillo Central Otago Pinot Noir 2011

16 August,2012
Domenic and Ally Mondillo's 12 ha vineyard in the Bendigo sub-region of Central Otago is proving to be a particularly favoured one. From the first vintage in 2004, the wines have displayed a remarkable consistency of character and quality, despite the different vintages. Although there are variations due to vintage (click here to read my Blog article with Domenic's recent visit to Wellington), and a separation of style to ‘feminine' and ‘masculine', I see the similarities more of a feature. The Pinot Noir wines all share a deliciously rich, dark berry and cherry fruited profile with vibrant, lively fruit and a tannin structure that makes the wines a little more accessible than many from neighbouring sites. The vineyard is tended with TLC by Domenic and the winemaking is similarly handled by Central Otago legend Rudi Bauer of Quartz Reef. Domenic promised to send me his 2011 vintage Pinot Noir for an initial appraisal. Here is my review. www.mondillo.com

Mondillo Bendigo Central Otago Pinot Noir 2011

Pinot Noir from New Zealand – Otago

18-/20

Moderately deep, dark ruby-red colour with light purple hues on rim. This has a soft bouquet with deep aromas of ripe dark berry fruits, black cherries and raspberry pastilles, and integrated, subtle oak spicing. Medium-full bodied, fresh, primary dark cherry and berry fruit flavours form a good core to the palate with a soft brightness and underlying energy. The tannins are fine-grained and softly presented, with restrained acidity in support, resulting in a rounded mouthfeel. The flavours build with a subtle richness and gently blossom in mid-palate, leading to a sustained, dry finish with attractively ripe flavours of raspberry liqueur. This is a ripe and bright-fruited Pinot Noir with a soft textured, but well-weighted and harmonious palate. Serve with Asian cuisine over the next 5-6+ years. Approx. 40% clone 5 with 114, 115, 667 and 777 fruit hand-picked and fully destemmed, given a 5-8 day cold soak and fermented to 14.5% alc., the wine spending 21-24 days on skins and aged 11 months in 30% new French oak barrels. 18.0-/20 Aug 2012 RRP $42.00
