Neudorf Moutere Pinot Gris 2011 and Home Vineyard Pinot Noir 2010

30 May,2012

The latest news at Neudorf is that they have experienced a brilliant harvest for 2012, and the wines will be a fitting marker for winemaker John Kavanagh's last vintage there. Todd Stevens from Felton Road will be moving north from Bannockburn to take over John's role. Todd has had extensive experience with Pinot Noir, thus the style and quality of Pinot Noir as developed by Tim Finn at Neudorf will be in good hands. Although Chardonnay is seen to be the signature variety for Neudorf, Pinot Noir has in reality joined it at the flagship level. Neudorf Vineyards is one of this country's very best wine producers and all of the wines that flow from Tim and Judy Finn's winery in the Upper Moutere are top examples of what is made in New Zealand. Here, I review the company's Moutere Pinot Gris 2011 and the ‘Home Vineyard‘ Moutere Pinot Noir 2010, regarded as their top white and red Pinot expressions, just recently released. www.neudorf.co.nz

Neudorf Moutere Nelson Pinot Gris 2011

Pinot Gris from New Zealand – Nelson

19-/20

Bright, light golden-hued straw-yellow, lighter on rim. The bouquet is very full, voluminous and layered, revealing aromas of ripe tropical fruits and pears with honey and complexing flinty reduction. This has concentration and density. Off-dry, this is full-bodied with mouthfilling flavours of ripe tropical fruits, pears, marmalade and honey, showing the influence of noble botrytis. The palate is generous with good alcoholic power and drive, and rounded, unctuous textures are balanced by bright, fresh acidity. Flavours of ripe fruits with notes of toffee and caramel merge with honey and exotic spices on a sustained finish. This rich, exotic and unctuous Pinot Gris is complexed by botrytis, and will match rich Asian and Middle Eastern fare over the next 3-4+ years. Clones 2/15, 7a and Mission fruit with some botrytis, hand-picked from the ‘Home Vineyard' WBP and wild yeast fermented, 15% in old large oak to 14.5% alc. and 6.4 g/L rs. The wine underwent MLF. 460 cases made. 19.0-/20 May 2012 RRP $29.90

Neudorf ‘Home Vineyard' Moutere Nelson Pinot Noir 2010

Pinot Noir from New Zealand – Nelson

19/20
Medium deep ruby-red, stylishly complex in layers of red fruits along with dried herb, spices and florals. Full-bodied and based on a complete textural palate with a complex showing of flavours of fruits and dried herbs, whole-bunch like elements. Great drive and linear presence, and the construction to see aging. 19.0/20 Jan 2013

83% ‘Home Vineyard' Pommard and mixed Burgundy clones, with 11% old 10/5 and 6% clone 22 fruit, destemmed, given a cold soak and indigenous yeast fermented to 14.5% alc. with temperatures up to 27°C. The wine spent 22-25 days on skins and was aged 12 months in 40% new French oak barrels. Dark, deep ruby-red colour. This has a concentrated and brooding nose that gradually unfolds to reveal dark berry and plum fruit flavours lifted with dark red floral and violet notes, dark herbs and spices. Medium-full bodied, tightly bound and concentrated flavours of bark berries, cherries and plums form a powerful and packed core with an underlying richness. Subtle nuances of spices, dark herbs and oak add interest and detail. The palate is framed by very fine-grained, firm tannins which provide serious mouthfeel, enriched by the fruit sweetness. Some alcohol is noticeable and this contributes to the drive to a very long, lingering finish of dark fruits and spices. A tightly bound, concentrated and structured Pinot Noir, this will develop richness and layers of interest over the next 8-10+ years. 170 cases made. 19.0+/20 May 2012 RRP $79.90
