Pacific Potion 2017 Hawke’s Bay Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Gris

07 August,2017
Pacific Potion is a brand of the Supernatural Wine Co. a producer of certified organic, naturally vinified, low sulphur white and skin-fermented white wines from a north-facing hillside estate on Millar Road in Hawke's Bay. The Supernatural Wine Co. was founded in 2009 by Millar Road vineyard owner Greg Collinge and winemaker Gabrielle Simmers who now runs an organic and biodynamic wine export business. The Millar Road property in the Tuki Tuki hills is 19.4 ha with 8.9 ha of grapes, 8.0 ha to Sauvignon Blanc and 0.9 ha to Pinot Gris, the vines planted over 2004 and 2005. It gained BioGro organic certification in March 2015, and biodynamic regimes are now employed.. Hayden Penny is the viticulturist and winemaker. The Pacific Potion brand was introduced in 2015 originally as a label for the KLM airline, and it is made in a slightly lighter style than the Supernatural wines. Here, I review the new 2017 Pacific Potion Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Gris.

Pacific Potion Hawke’s Bay Sauvignon Blanc 2017

Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand – Hawke’s Bay

Bright straw-yellow colour with light golden hues, a little lighter on the edge. This has a soft, fresh nose with positive depth and a good core of green stonefruits and gooseberries with notes of tropical fruits and fresh herbs. The aromatics show freshness and clarity. Dry to taste and medium-bodied, the palate possesses a well-packed and concentrated heat with flavours of white and green stonefruits, gooseberrie and tropical fruits and subtle notes of fresh herbs. The palate is rounded, building to show some phenolic textures which add to the mouthfeel, body and presence, with some good grip. The palate has a fresh, zesty acid thread, and the wine carries with good drive to a finely firm and dry finish of herbs and sonefruits. This is a dry Sauvignon Blanc with a rounded core and a positively textured , fresh palate showing stonefruit, gooseberry and herb flavours. Match with herb-marinated poultry, pork and veal dishes over the next 2-3 years. The fruit was Pellenc harvester picked, given 6 hours skin contact and fermented to 11.6% alc. and <1g/L RS, the wine undergoing 3 months battonage. Certified BioGro organic. Approx. 13,000 bottles made. 17.5+/20 Aug 2017 RRP $25.00

Pacific Potion Hawke’s Bay Pinot Gris 2017

Pinot Gris from New Zealand – Hawke’s Bay

Bright, light straw-yellow colour with slight green hues. The nose is fresh with light aromas of white stonefruits with lifted floral nuances and suggestions of honeysuckle. The aromatics are gentle and soft in volume, but build in intensity and presence with aeration. Medium-dry to taste and light-medium bodied, the palate has fresh and intense flavours of white stonefruits, florals and hints of tropical fruits and honeysuckle. The fruit is subtly rich, with fresh, lacy acidity providing balance. The wine flows along a smooth, fine line with good energy, leading to a delicately nuanced, moderately sustained finish. This is a fresh, moderately rich off-dry Pinot Gris with clean stonefruit flavours with notes of florals, tropical fruits and honeysuckle. Serve with mild Asian cuisine over the next 2-3 years. Hand-picked fruit fermented to 11.1% alc. and 8 g/L RS, the wine undergoing 3 months batonnage. Certified BioGro organic. Approx. 4,000 bottles made. 17.5/20 Aug 2017 RRP $25.00
