Palliser Estate Martinborough Chardonnay 2011

08 August,2012
The Palliser Estate Chardonnay is already at the top of its game, being one of the district's best examples. Yet winemakers Allan Johnson and Pip Goodwin are ever vigilant in trying to improve the wine, making it more refined and elegant, while building in more ever-so subtle layers of complexity. The 2011 vintage provided the opportunity of crafting a more elegant style, and they have handled this with aplomb. Here is my review. www.palliser.co.nz

Palliser Estate Martinborough Chardonnay 2011

Chardonnay from New Zealand – Wairarapa & Wellington

18.5-/20

Brilliant straw-yellow colour with pale golden hues, light on edge. The nose is full and voluminous with ripe stonefruit and citrus aromas, finely concentrated, revealing layers of flinty lees and buttery MLF elements. Medium-full bodied, soft flavours of grapefruit and butterscotch gently fill the mouth, with complexing notes of flint, nutty oak and butter in the background. Fine, lacy acidity and a fine textural thread are counterpoised by barrel-ferment creaminess. This has an elegant concentration and depth that carries through to a very sustained finish with citrus fruit flavours, This gently mouthfilling Chardonnay has complexing layers of flavour and is elegant and lively in expression. Match with seafood, poultry and pork over the next 3-5 years. 85% clone 95 and 15% Mendoza fruit, fully barrel-fermented, half with indigenous yeasts to 13.0% alc., the wine aged 11 months in oak on lees, stirred only once, with 32% undergoing MLF. 18.5-/20 Aug 2012 RRP $30.00
