Red Barrel Hawke’s Bay Rosé 2016

Rose from New Zealand – Hawke’s Bay

Light cherry-red colour with some depth, lighter on the rim. The nose is fresh and a little brackish with aromas of redcurrant, red cherries and pomegranate along with subtly refreshing notes of fresh herbs and stalk nuances, the aromatics forming an elegantly concentrated core. Dry to taste and light-medium bodied, the palate has a finely concentrated, firm core with light redcurrant, raspberry and red cherry fruit flavours intermingling with earthy and fresh herbal element. The mouthfeel is thirst-quenchingly dry with a fine phenolic line, balanced by refreshing lacy acidity. The flavours are carried by the textures to a crisp, dry finish of redcurrants and herbs. This is a dry rosé with a firm core of redcurrants, red cherries, pomegranate fruit with herb and earthy notes on a mouthwatering, textured palate. Match with tapas and Mediterranean fare over the next 2+ years. 100% Merlot, hand-picked and WBP, cool-fermented in tank to 13.0% alc., and <2 g/L RS, the wine aged on light lees, undergoing batonnage. 16.5/20 Feb 2017 RRP $20.00

Red Barrel Hawke’s Bay Chardonnay 2013

Chardonnay from New Zealand – Hawke’s Bay

Bright straw-yellow colour with light golden hues, paler on rim. The nose is softly full with aromas of ripe yellow stonefruits and citrus fruits along with subtle layers of mealy, flinty lees complexities and nutty, creamy barrel-ferment notes. Musky tropical fruit elements emerge with aeration. Medium-full bodied, the flavours of yellow stonefruits and tropical fruits are restrained in expression. The palate is weighty and concentrated, showing positive drive and line, unfolding mealy, flinty notes and nutty, toasty oak. The mouthfeel is creamy in texture, with poised acidity, and a building core of texture which carries through the palate leading to a dry, fine, grainy finish with lingering citrus notes. This is a concentrated and weighty Chardonnay with restrained stonefruit flavours and subtle layers of complexity following a grainy, textural line. It will develop greater richness over the next 5 years. Match with poultry and pork dishes. Hand-picked Chardonnay fruit, Mendoza and clones 15 and 95, WBP and fully fermented by indigenous yeasts initially, in new French oak puncheon to 14.5% alc., the wine aged 11 months in barrel with regular batonnage and MLF. 18.0-/20 Mar 2015 RRP $28.00

Red Barrel Hawke’s Bay Chardonnay 2014

Chardonnay from New Zealand – Hawke’s Bay

Bright, light straw-yellow colour, very pale on rim. This has an elegantly proportioned nose with tightly bound and concentrated aromas of ripe yellow stonefruits and citrus fruits that unfold layers of mealy, nutty notes, creamy barrel-ferment elements, oak toast and butterscotch MLF. Suggestions of complex flinty lees emerge in the glass. Full-bodied, this is bold and rich in flavour with ripe citrus and yellow stonefruits interwoven with creamy-textured barrel-ferment layers, nutty and toasty oak, and enrichening lemon-curd and butterscotch MLF. Rich and weighty, there is underlying alcoholic power and drive, along with integrated acidity adding to the energy. The wine carries to a fresh, fine-textured, sustained citrussy, creamy and nutty finish. This is a richly flavoured Chardonnay with layers of citrus, creamy and nutty notes, and plenty of underlying power. Match with creamy sauced pasta and poultry dishes, veal and pork over the next 4+ years. Hand-picked fruit, clones Mendoza, 15 and 95, WBP, and fermentation in barrique and puncheon initiated by indigenous yeasts to 14.5% alc., the wine aged 11 months in 50% new oak, undergoing batonnage and approx. 60% MLF. 18.5/20 Dec 2015 RRP $28.00

Red Barrel Hawke’s Bay Merlot/Syrah 2012

Merlot from New Zealand – Hawke’s Bay

80% Merlot and 20% Syrah from the ‘Home’ block, hand-picked and fermented to 13.0% alc., the wine aged 12 months in 10% new French oak. Dark, deep, black-hued ruby-red colour with light purple on rim. The nose is softly full with good depth of fragrant dark redcurrant aromas, along with complexing savoury, nutty oak, spices and game elements. Medium-full bodied, bold and up-front flavours of red and blackcurrants intermingle with plum and spicy berry fruit notes. The fruit juiciness is supported by grainy tannin extraction providing a moderately robust mouthfeel with grip to balance the sweetness. Bright, fresh acidity underlines the palate line and along with the tannins lead to a grainy, dry and soft finish. This is a fulsome, lively Merlot and Syrah blend with a robust palate. Red Barrel Hawke’s Bay Syrah 2011

Syrah from New Zealand – Hawke’s Bay

Dark, deep, black-hued purple-red colour, youthful in appearance. This has a full, and well-packed bouquet of ripe black berry fruits entwined with black pepper, spices and violet floras, the aromatics opening up in volume, revealing subtle secondary earth and minerally complexities. Full-bodied, the palate is rich with ripe, fleshy blackberry and peppery fruits, along with spice, herb and floral elements. The fruit expression is stylishly restrained, but the palate exudes presence from a concentrated core. The tannins are supple, with discreet background acidity, and enhance a smooth flow to a soft-textured, lively and fresh, rich, long and spicy finish. This is a fulsome and stylishly concentrated, juicy Syrah with aromatic black and spicy fruits. Match with lamb and venison, and Middle Eastern cuisine over the next 6+ years. Fruit from the ‘Arataki’ and ‘House’ blocks, destemmed and fermented to 14.0% alc., the wine aged 9 months in 75%new French oak. 18.0+/20 Jun 2014 RRP $28.00

Red Barrel ‘Reserve’ Hawke’s Bay Syrah 2013

Syrah from New Zealand – Hawke’s Bay

A barrel selection wine. Fruit from the ‘House’ block of the Red Barrel vineyard, Havelock North, hand-picked and fermented to 14.0% alc., the wine aged 18 months in 50% new French oak barrels. Dark, deep, black-hued ruby-red colour, lighter edged. This has a full and powerful nose with concentrated aromas of ripe, opulent and vibrant blackberry and black plum fruit interwoven with layers of exotic spices, black pepper and toasty oak. Medium-full bodied, the flavours of black berried and plummy fruit flavours are ripe and exude decadence, and are elegantly concentrated forming a strong and rich core, unfolding layers of exotic Asian spices, black pepper, liquorice and toasty oak. The mouthfeel is opulent and vibrant, the acidity providing vitality and freshness, and refined tannins lend a smooth, supple flow. The fruit sweetness and succulence is beautifully balanced by the extraction which carries the wine to a very long and sustained finish of plums, spices and liquorice. This is an elegantly concentrated, vibrantly luscious Syrah with exotic plum, spice and oak flavours and a fine-grained, smooth flowing palate.
