Red Barrel 2013 Hawke’s Bay and ‘Reserve’ Syrahs

16 September,2015
John and Juliette Lockie have a true boutique wine operation based on Te Mata Road at Havelock North in Hawke’s Bay. With previous winegrowing interests, they purchased the small Zepelin vineyard in 2010 replacing the Cabernet Sauvignon with Chardonnay, whilst retaining the Merlot and Syrah, which were planted in 1997. There, they grow 2.6 ha of vines and have made by Dave McKee a tight range of classic Hawke’s Bay styles. Here, I review the new release 2013 Syrah and a ‘Reserve’ Syrah, the first time a wine has been bottled in a super-premium tier, acknowledging the outstanding 2013 growing conditions. www.redbarrel.co.nz

Red Barrel Hawke’s Bay Syrah 2013

Syrah from New Zealand – Hawke’s Bay

18.5-/20
Full, very dark, deep, black-hued ruby-red colour, a little lighter on the rim. The nose is full with soft, ripe dark red and black berried fruits harmoniously melded with layers of Asian spices, black pepper, along with subtle white pepper and lifted dark red floral notes. The aromatics build in intensity, unveiling earth and liquorice elements with aeration. Medium-full bodied, the palate features solidly packed flavours of dark red berry fruits, plums and spices, entwined with black pepper, earth and savoury red florals. Soft, grainy textures underline the fruit and fill the mouth, with soft, balanced acidity adding drive and energy. The wine flows positively unfolding spice, liquorice and toasty oak nuances, carrying through to an elegant, long lingering, fine-textured, dry finish. This is a softly concentrated, ripe Syrah with flavours of black fruits, spices and earth, on a fine, grainy-textured palate. Match with barbecued and roasted red meat dishes over the next 6-8 years. Fruit from the ‘House’ and ‘Arataki’ blocks of the Red Barrel vineyard, Havelock North, hand-picked and fermented to 14.0% alc., the wine aged 18 months in 20% new French oak barrels. 180 dozen made. 18.5-/20 Sep 2015 RRP $30.00

Red Barrel ‘Reserve’ Hawke’s Bay Syrah 2013

Syrah from New Zealand – Hawke’s Bay

19-/20
A barrel selection wine. Fruit from the ‘House’ block of the Red Barrel vineyard, Havelock North, hand-picked and fermented to 14.0% alc., the wine aged 18 months in 50% new French oak barrels. Dark, deep, black-hued ruby-red colour, lighter edged. This has a full and powerful nose with concentrated aromas of ripe, opulent and vibrant blackberry and black plum fruit interwoven with layers of exotic spices, black pepper and toasty oak. Medium-full bodied, the flavours of black berried and plummy fruit flavours are ripe and exude decadence, and are elegantly concentrated forming a strong and rich core, unfolding layers of exotic Asian spices, black pepper, liquorice and toasty oak. The mouthfeel is opulent and vibrant, the acidity providing vitality and freshness, and refined tannins lend a smooth, supple flow. The fruit sweetness and succulence is beautifully balanced by the extraction which carries the wine to a very long and sustained finish of plums, spices and liquorice. This is an elegantly concentrated, vibrantly luscious Syrah with exotic plum, spice and oak flavours and a fine-grained, smooth flowing palate. Serve with slow-cooked game meat dishes over the next 8-10+ years. 50 dozen made. 19.0-/20 Sep 2015 RRP $58.00
