River-T Estate Waitaki 2016 Rose, Riesling and Pinot Gris, and 2015 Pinot Noir

River-T Estate is the 3 ha vineyard of Murray Turner, a fourth generation horticulturalist who planted vines on the banks of the Waitaki River 5 km east of Kurow in 2007. The vineyard was planted over from stonefruit trees in 2007 to Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Riesling. After supplying his grapes on a contract basis, Murray established his own label ‘River-T’ with his partner Karen Tweed. Antony Worsch of Alexandra Vintners makes the Rosé and Pinot Gris, while Grant Taylor of Valli Vineyards makes the Riesling and Pinot Noir. www.rivertestate.co.nz

Rose from New Zealand – Otago

Bright cerise-pink colour with some depth and slight purple hues on the rim. The nose is full and up-front with bright, aromatic strawberries and cream notes along with lifted red florals, and an amalgam of watermelon and confectionary. Off-dry to taste and medium-bodied, the fruit is sweetly aromatic and vibrant with flavours of strawberries and cream, red florals and fruit-pastille confectionary. The mouthfeel is refreshing with lacy acidity, and the wine flows along a fine-textured phenolic-threaded line, carrying to a lingering, well-packed finish of strawberries and confectionary. This is a bright and aromatic, up-front, refreshing off-dry rosé with flavours of strawberries and cream, and confectionary. Serve as an aperitif and with dim sum or tapas over the next 2 years. Riesling from New Zealand – Otago

Bright straw-yellow colour with some depth, pale edged. The nose is finely concentrated with good depth of lime fruit entwined with sherbet, exotic florals, honeysuckle and refreshing, steely minerals at the core. Medium-sweet to taste and medium-bodied, the palate is lively with zesty fruit flavours of limes, interwoven with sherbet, white florals and honeysuckle, unfolding nuances of minerals. The mouthfeel is thirst-quenching from the bright acidity, and the wine follows a fine-textured line with good energy and tension. The palate leads to a long and sustained finish of honey and minerals. This is a refreshing and lively medium-sweet Riesling with lime, sherbet and honied flavour along with mineral nuances. Match with Asian fare over the next 4-5 years. Hand-picked cool-fruit fermented to 13.0% alc. and 18.3 g/L RS, TA 7.39 g/L and pH 3.06. 18.5-/20 Feb 2017 RRP $18.95

Brilliant straw-yellow colour with some depth, lighter on the rim. This has an elegantly presented nose with well-concentrated aromas of white and yellow stonefruits along with subtle layers of florals with nuances of honeysuckle and minerals. This has finesse and clarity. Medium-dry to taste and medium-full bodied, the palate possesses refreshing white and yellow stonefruit flavours along with subtle notes of florals and honey, and suggestions of nuts and minerals. The palate has a rounded mouthfeel with a firm core, and the wine carries along a fine-textured line with integrated acidity, leading to a restrained finish of stonefruits and florals. This is an elegantly concentrated medium-dry Pinot Gris with stonefruit and floral flavours and hints of honey on a balanced, integrated palate. Match with most white meat dishes and Middle Eastern cuisine over the next 4 years. Hand-picked cool-fruit fermented to 13.5% alc. and 14 g/L RS. 18.0/20 Feb 2017 RRP $18.95

Pinot Noir from New Zealand – Otago

Light ruby-red colour, pale on the rim with slight purple hues. The nose is firm with well-concentrated and dense aromas of ripe strawberry and red cherry fruit, along with herb motes, red florals and subtle whole bunch stalk elements at the core. Medium-bodied, the palate is stylishly restrained in expression with gentle flavours of strawberries and red cherries melded with red floral and herb notes, and suggestions of whole bunch stalk. The mouthfeel is sweet and juicy with light tannin extraction lending suppleness and accessibility. Lacy acidity provides energy and the wine leads to an elegant, light finish of strawberries and herbs. This is an elegant, accessible Pinot Noir with strawberry and cherry fruit along with herb elements. Serve with tuna and salmon, and with poultry over the next 4 years. Clones 5 and 115 hand-picked and fermented with 20% whole bunches to 13.5% alc., the wine aged 11.5 months in 30% new French oak. 17.5+/20 Feb 2017 RRP $29.95
