Rock Ferry and Trig Hill Pinot Noirs

06 August,2012
Rock Ferry is a new entrant on the wine scene with all the credentials and aspirations to do well. It is named after a site where early settlers crossed the Wairau River. Grapegrowers Tom and Fiona Hutchison launched the business in 2005 with white wines from ‘The Corners' 13.5 ha vineyard in the Rapaura district in Marlborough. Included in their vineyard holdings are ‘Trig Hill' in Bendigo, Central Otago with 19 ha, developed from 2003, and another in Marlborough, the 9.5 ha ‘Orchard' vineyard in the Wairau, purchased in 2007. The vineyards are farmed organically and biodynamically, Kurt Simcic and Jason Thomson tending the Marlborough and Central Otago vines respectively. The highly experienced Allan McWilliams has made the wines from the start, now in the winery on site at the ‘Orchard' vineyard built in 2009. Rock Ferry operates an excellent café and cellar door on Hammerichs Road. I review three Pinot Noirs from the Rock Ferry Central Otago vineyard, yet to be released. www.rockferry.co.nz

Rock Ferry Central Otago Pinot Noir 2010

Pinot Noir from New Zealand – Otago

18/20

Very dark, black-red colour with purple hues. This has a softly concentrated and well packed nose of dark cherry and berry fruit aromas with ripe plum notes and oak emerging in the glass. Medium-full bodied, rich, solidly concentrated dark berry fruit and plum flavours are supported by good tannin grip forming a weighty core. Soft acidity enhances the mouthfilling textures and the wine has a generous presence. This is well-balanced, the oaking sensitive, adding subtly to the richness, which carries through to a strong, weighty and long dry finish. This is a mouthfilling, ripe Pinot Noir with good weight, some textural grip and good balance. Serve with Middle Eastern and Asian poultry dishes over the next 5-6+ years. Predominantly 115 clone fruit from the ‘Trig Hill' vineyard in Bendigo, fully destemmed and indigenous yeast fermented to 14.0% alc., the wine aged 12 months in 30% new French oak. 18.0/20 Aug 2012 RRP $39.00

This is a barrel selection. Dark, deep, purple-hued ruby-red colour, very full. The bouquet is powerful and intense with vibrant, ripe, dark berry and plum aromas laced with spicy oak, unfolding liquorice notes. Full-bodied, bright, lusciously ripe fruit flavours of dark berries, plums and liquorice are interwoven with oak spices, forming a smooth and seamless flow through the palate. This is well-concentrated with fine tannin structure and good acid tension, the wine showing excellent presence and depth. The finish is very long and sustained, featuring ripe dark fruits. This beautifully ripened and well concentrated Pinot Noir is seamless with its power and exotic with its oak spicing. Match with rich poultry, pork and veal dishes over the next 7-9+ years. 19.0-/20 Aug 2012 RRP $65.00

Rock Ferry ‘Trig Hill' Central Otago Pinot Noir 2009

Pinot Noir from New Zealand – Otago

18/20

85% Abel clone with the remainder 115 from the ‘Hill' and ‘Mid' blocks of the ‘Trig Hill' vineyard, Bendigo, destemmed and indigenous yeast fermented to 14.0% alc., the wine aged 12 months in 30% new French oak. This is a selection of barrels. Moderately deep purple-hued ruby-red colour with some garnet on edge. The nose is full with ethereal and layered aromas of ripe red berry fruits, savoury cooked strawberries, spicy herbs and oak all interwoven with nuances of earthy complexities. Full-bodied, soft, mouthfilling flavours of savoury red berry fruits, brown spices, mushrooms, earth and oak form a complex amalgam on palate. There is richness and succulence, but also restraint and style. The fruit is supported by fine-grained tannins that grow to show good substance. The acidity is discreet, providing subtle tension to the sustained, savoury finish. This is a rich, complex and layered Pinot Noir with savoury flavours. Match with coq au vin and casseroles over the next 6-8+ years. 18.0/20 Aug 2012 RRP $65.00
