Saint Clair Pinot Gris and Noir Releases

16 February,2012
The dedication to preserving individual lots of distinctive fruit has been the basis for much of Saint Clair's success. Having 250 small tanks for fermentation allows the separate handling of small lots of fruit. From this great resource of many different parcels is the ability to keep special wines separated for appropriate handling, and the ability to blend complementary wines for a more complete style. The ‘Pioneer Block' wines exemplify the former approach and the ‘Premium' and ‘Vicars' Choice' tiers are examples of the latter. Here are two classic releases, one of each option, the ‘Premium' regional blend of Pinot Gris and a ‘Pioneer Block' Pinot Noir from the Waihopi Valley. www.saintclair.co.nz

Saint Clair ‘Premium' Marlborough Pinot Gris 2011

Pinot Gris from New Zealand – Marlborough

17.5-/20
Bright, very pale straw colour, near colourless on edge. The nose is very elegant and freshly presented with lively white stonefruit, flint and attractive mineral aromas, showing great purity. Dry to taste and medium-weighted, the feature on palate is crisp, clear and racy acidity, mouthwatering but with delicacy. The tight, linear, mineral-infused stonefruit flavours emerge and are backed by very fine textures, and the wine finishes long, dry and steely. Fruit from the Wairau and Awatere Valleys, cool-fermented in stainless-steel to 13.0% alc. and 6.5 g/L rs. This is a very pure and steely Pinot Grigio style to match with antipasto and seafood over the next 2-3+ years. 17.5-/20 Feb 2012 RRP $21.50

Saint Clair ‘Pioneer Block 15 – Strip Block' Marlborough Pinot Noir 2010

Pinot Noir from New Zealand – Marlborough

18.5+/20
Clones 115 and 777 from the ‘Strip Block' in the Lower Waihopi Valley, given a cold soak and fermented to 13.5% alc., the wine aged 10 months in 37% new French oak barriques. Named after a unique, narrow strip of land with devigorating soils where the vines are planted. Bright ruby-red colour with youthful purple hues, very even. This has a very fine aromatic expression, with intense, perfumed dark plums, spices and violetty florals along with well-balanced oak elements. It reveals nuances of game with air time. Medium-full bodied, very fine, soft flavours of dark plum and raspberry fruit, oak toast and cinnamon spice are framed by silky-smooth tannins and enlivened by crisp, lively acidity. The fruit is rich and succulent, yet fresh and bright. This shows harmony, style, proportion and length. There is a subtle core of concentrated fruit which will continue to unfold over the next 4-6 years. A wine of silkiness and fine intensity as well as bright, rich flavours to match with fine Asian cuisine. 18.5+/20 Feb 2012 RRP $33.50
