Squawking Magpie ‘SQM Platinum' Syrah 2007

20 July,2012
Syrah has been a very successful variety for Gavin Yortt and his Gimblett Gravels ‘Squawking Magpie' label, the ‘Stoned Crow' Syrah consistently winning gold medals at the major wine judging competitions held in this country. The release of a super-premium Syrah, the ‘SQM Platinum' Syrah 2007 marks 30 years in the Gimblett Gravels and 10 years of Syrah production at the top level. Here is my review of the wine. www.squawkingmagpie.co.nz

Squawking Magpie ‘SQM Platinum' Gimblett Gravels Hawke's Bay Syrah 2007

Syrah from New Zealand – Hawke’s Bay

18-/20

Very full, near impenetrable black-hued ruby-red colour with youthful purple hue. This has a very fine and elegantly presented nose, lifted with ethereal black fruits and inky elements, exotic spices, floral esters and minerals. Medium-fill bodied, this is elegantly proportioned with subtly layered flavours of ripe black fruits, lifted florals, spiced herbs and exotic elements. The palate has considerable extraction with very fine-grained tannins that contain the tightly bound fruit. Oaking is sensitive and balanced, providing char nuances which intermingle with minerally notes. Bright acidity results in a liveliness and freshness to the mouthfeel which carries through to a refined finish with lingering oak and spiced liquorice nuances. This is an elegant and ethereally lifted Syrah with exotic spices and considerable, but fine-grained extract. It is still youthful with much to unfold. Match with Mediterranean cuisine and hard cheeses over the next 8-12+ years. A single vineyard wine from the Gimblett Gravels, 100% Syrah, fermented to 14.0% alc., the wine aged 18 months in 70% new French oak. Only 400 bottles produced. 18.0-/20 Jul 2012 RRP $69.00
