Stanley Estates Awatere Pinot Gris 2017

01 February,2018

Stanley Estates is the Awatere Valley wine venture of Steve Pellett and Bridget Ennals, who purchased 11 ha of land in 2003 to produce wine. Since then they have expanded their holdings to three vineyards with 12.5 ha of Sauvignon Blanc, 3.0 ha of Pinot Noir, 2.2 ha of Pinot Gris, 1.2 ha of Albarino, 1 ha of Lagrein and 0.3 ha of Chardonnay. Steve tends to the vineyards and the contracted winemaker is the very experienced Eveline Fraser. The Stanley Estates wines are growing in recognition, as wine styles, particularly with the Albarino and Lagrein are explored, and the vines grow in maturity. The wines show fine textures and subtle complexing inputs. Here, I review the new 2017 Pinot Gris. www.stanleyestates.co.nz

Stanley Estates ‘Single Vineyard’ Awatere Valley Marlborough Pinot Gris 2017

Pinot Gris from New Zealand – Marlborough

18-/20

Bright, light straw colour, pale on the edge. The nose is softly voluminous with good depth and intensity of white stonefruits and a tight, fine amalgam of nutty notes and minerals at the core. This is fresh and elegant in presentation. Dry to taste and medium-bodied, the palate has finely concentrated flavours of white stonefruits along with subtle notes of white florals and a hint of honeysuckle, entwined with nutty and mineral elements. The mouthfeel is bright and vibrant with fresh, lacy acidity and a refined, textural line balancing the subtle fruit richness. This has good linearity and carries to a lingering, mineral nuanced finish. This is a refreshing and elegant dry Pinot Gris with white stonefruit, floral and mineral flavours, and a palate with good intensity and precision. Serve with Thai, Vietnamese and Japanese fare. Estate fruit, vines 10 y.o., 75% clone 457 tank-fermented and aged on lees, with 75% clone M2 hand-picked and indigenous yeast fermented in seasoned oak, the wine aged 5 months on lees, the wine at 13.0% alc. and 3.8 g/L RS. 18.0-/20 Feb 2018 RRP $22.95
