Starborough Sauvignon Blanc 2012 & Pinot Noir 2011

20 July,2012
It is extremely pleasing to see a number of wine growers and producers forge ahead with raising quality and expanding their ranges of wines available. It's a sure sign of doing it well, combined with some forethought and a little risk-taking. I take my hat off to such people who are clearly braver than I am. The Jones family of Starborough Station , near Seddon in the Awatere Valley have expanded their holdings by recently purchasing the 25 ha ‘Long Lane' vineyard in the Dashwood area of the Awatere Valley to supplement their existing ‘Starborough Terraces' Awatere vines and those planted in O'Dwyer's Road in the Rapaura district of Marlborough. The ‘Long Lane' site contributed fruit to the first 2012 finished Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc wine I have reviewed. In addition to this, giving added impetus to Starborough's market presence is the imminent release of their first own-fruited Pinot Noir based on the fourth crop from their vines, the previous harvests being sold to another winery. www.starborough.co.nz

Starborough ‘Family Estate' Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2012

Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand – Marlborough

18.5/20

Bright, pale straw-yellow colour with some green hues, pale on rim. The bouquet is full and expansive with softly rich and ripe passionfruit aromas interwoven with tropical fruits and minerals, quite seamless in presentation. Dry to taste, very lively, bright and racy flavours of mineral-infused passionfruit and a very fine textural thread form a deep core to the palate. The acidity is racy and brisk, endowing the mouthfeel with plenty of tension and flow, and balancing the fine textures to provide a dry, fine line. Though tightly bound and clearly with plenty to unfold, there is considerable juicy sweetness to the fruit which carries through to a very long zesty finish with detail and nuances. This is a racy, concentrated Sauvignon Blanc with passionfruit and minerally flavours that will show more over the next 3 years. Serve with most seafood, poultry and vegetable dishes as well as sheep cheeses. Fruit 50% from the ‘Long Lane' vineyard, Dashwood in the Awatere Valley and 50% from the ‘O'Dwyers Farm' site in the Wairau Valley, stainless-steel fermented to 13.0% alc. 18.5/20 Oct 2012 RRP $21.95

Fruit 50% from the ‘Long Lane' vineyard, Dashwood in the Awatere Valley and 50% from the ‘O'Dwyers Farm' site in the Wairauv Valley, stainless-steel fermented to 13.0% alc. Very pale straw colour with green hues, pale on rim. This has a full nose with a concentrated and intense core of pungent passionfruity aromas along with gooseberry and minerally notes in support. The aromatics are already voluminous, and promise to show more. Dry to taste, the palate features racy acidity offering smooth and slippery textures and enable the passionfruit and gooseberry fruit flavours to flow seamlessly through the palate line. Though still tightly bound with a concentrated core, attractive detail and nuance is apparent. The wine has a moderately sustained, mouthwatering, crisp and zingy finish. This racy and mouthwatering Sauvignon Blanc shows pungent and minerally fruit with intensity and depth. Serve with seafood, poultry and creamy cheeses over the next 3+ years. 18.0+/20 Jul 2012 RRP $21.95

Starborough Marlborough Pinot Noir 2011

Pinot Noir from New Zealand – Marlborough

18-/20
Pale ruby-red colour with some garnet hues, lighter on edge. Full, softly packed and intense aromas of dark strawberry and cranberry fruits with lifted red florals, oak spices and herbs show on bouquet. Medium-bodied, flavours of ripe strawberry and raspberry fruits combine with dark red floral notes. This is fulsome and up-front, but there is a strong and deep core to the palate. The tannins are supple and understated, backing the fruitiness, and along with soft acidity, the flavours are broad, mouthfilling and rich, growing in intensity in the glass. The richness and weight drive the flavours to a long, sweet-fruited finish. This is a softly textured and rich Pinot Noir with growing fruit expression. Match with tuna, turkey, duck and pork dishes over the next 4-5 years. Equal portions of clone 667 and 777 fruit from the ‘O'Dwyers Farm' vineyard on the Wairau Valley, indigenous yeast fermented with whole berries to 13.5% alc., the wine aged 11 months in 40% new French oak barrels. 160 cases made. 18.0-/20 Jul 2012 RRP $28.95
