Terrace Edge Pinot Gris 2011

10 July,2012
It has been a seamless transition from Belinda Gould making the Terrace Edge wines to Dom Maxwell taking over. With the Muddy Water winery and vineyard purchase by Greystone came the contract to craft the wines for the Chapman family. At the heart of the style and quality of the Terrace Edge wines is the vineyard site and the characteristics it imbues the wines. The traits of opulence, weight and breadth seem to be consistent over a number of vintages, and they have endeared the wines to drinkers and judges alike. Pete Chapman and his cousin Mark Tarr are fastidious in their care of the site and vines, and this is an important factor in how the wines have turned out. Here is my review of the new 2011 Pinot Gris. www.terraceedge.co.nz

Terrace Edge Waipara Valley Pinot Gris 2011

Pinot Gris from New Zealand – Canterbury & Waipara

18.5/20
Hand-picked fruit cropped at 0.8 t/ha, WBP and indigenous yeast fermented in seasoned oak to 14.0% alc. and 14 g/L rs, the wine given batonnage for one month. Bright, light, golden hued straw colour. This has a subtly rich and voluminous bouquet of spiced pears and yellow stonefruits, along with nuances of honey and minerals. The breadth of aromatics is a feature, and the nose reveals flinty lees work as well as hints of barrel. Medium-dry to taste, rich, weighty and deep fruit flavours of yellow stonefruits, honey and minerals form a deep core with great presence, and the fruit is enhanced by bright acidity. A little alcohol generosity and power adds to the drive through the palate. The mouthfeel is smooth and near unctuous, and carries through smoothly to a sustained finish. This ripe, powerful and weighty Pinot Gris is smooth with its stylish vinosity. Match with Middle Eastern and Mediterranean fare over the next 4-5 years. 18.5/20 Jul 2012 RRP $23.95
