The Elder Pinot Martinborough Pinot Gris 2011

23 July,2012

As a new entrant, ‘The Elder Pinot' made quite an impact with the initial release of a 2010 Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir. (Click here to see my reviews.) The basis of the wines is quality fruit from a striking vineyard overlooking the Te Muna Valley in Martinborough which is tended by Mike and Margaret Hanson. Nigel Elder and Bridget Taylor are the other partners involved and they have contracted Paul Mason at Martinborough Vineyard, where Nigel worked as viticulturist, to make the wines. The wines have been commercially successful, necessitating the release now of the 2011 Pinot Gris. Here is my review of this wine. www.theelderpinot.co.nz

The Elder Pinot Martinborough Pinot Gris 2011

Pinot Gris from New Zealand – Wairarapa & Wellington

17.5-/20

Bright, pale sraw-yellow colour, pale on edge. Fresh, steely, minerally yellow stonefruit aromas show with good depth and detail. Some exotic tropical fruit notes with barrel work and nuances of oak emerge in the glass, growing with interest. Dryish to taste, and medium-bodied, gentle, but lively citrus and stonefruit flavours are enhanced with nuances of white florals and minerals. The acidity is bright and lively, and carry a good core of fruit with some linearity and drive. This has a softly refreshing mouthfeel that leads to a crisp, steely and racy finish. This is an elegantly refreshing Pinot Gris to serve with antipasto or match with seafood and poultry over the next 3-4+ years. Fruit from the ‘Hanson' vineyard, Te Muna, fermented to 13.5% alc. and 5 g/L rs. The wine was partially aged in seasoned oak, and given some batonnage, with no MLF. 17.5-/20 Jul 2012 RRP $37.00
