Tiki Estate ‘Koro' Central Otago Pinot Noir 2010

13 July,2012
The Tiki Estate brand has taken a step up over the last year with a clear definition of labelling and tiers, as well as styles that represent regionality and sites. The company's Wairau Alpine Valley vineyards on the western edge of the Marlborough growing area is no doubt the engine room for Royce and Sue McKean, and produce the specialist ‘Alpine Valley' tier as well as providing the majority of the fruit for the Tiki Estate wines. However it is the single vineyard expressions that are special, being from the home ‘Waiata' vineyard in Waipara, and the Pinot Noir from Sue McKean's father Denis Marshall's site in Gibbston, Central Otago. They sit at the apex of the offerings. I review the new release ‘Koro' Pinot Noir 2010, the flagship for Tiki Estate. www.tikiwine.com

Tiki ‘Koro' Central Otago Pinot Noir 2010

Pinot Noir from New Zealand – Otago

17.5-/20

Light ruby-red colour with some purple hues. The bouquet is elegant, quite tightly bound with an ethereal nature showing red berry fruits and red florals, underscored by some funky earth, mineral and minerally complexities. Medium-bodied, the fruit flavours of black cherries, red berries and fresh herbs are tightly concentrated forming a good core to the palate line, and oaking is balanced and unobtrusive. Fine-grained tannins show with some youthful firmness, and lead to a moderately sustained, dry finish with herb and minerally nuances. This is a classical, cool-edged Gibbston Pinot Noir that is firm and slender in style, with tightly-held fruit that will unfold over the next 5-7 years. Serve with roasted pork or with firm cheeses. Fruit from the Gibbston Valley fermented to 13.0% alc., the wine aged 11 months in 30% new French oak barriques. Winemaker: Christopher Keys. 17.5-/20 Jul 2012 RRP $35.00
