TOSQ Central Otago Pinot Noir 2009 and 2010

08 August,2012

Carl and Sue Thompson have been grapegrowers in Central Otago for over a decade. Planting their 4 ha ‘Terrace' vineyard in the Pisa district, just north of Cromwell in 2001, they had been selling their fruit to different producers. The Thompsons decided to produce a wine under their own label, 2009 being the first vintage. Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir is produced from 1 ha and 3 ha of each variety respectively, but some fruit is still contracted out. The vineyard is tended organically, following biodynamic practices by Sue, and winemaking is by Dan and Sarah-Kaye Dineen at the Maude winery in Wanaka. The brand TOSQ is based on the first letters of the Thompson parents and sons names – Thomo (as Carl is known as), Oscar, Sue and Quinn. www.tosq.co.nz

TOSQ Central Otago Pinot Noir 2009

Pinot Noir from New Zealand – Otago

17.5-/20

Even, purple-hued ruby-red colour, with a little garnet on rim. This has a light, freshly attractive and aromatic bouquet of soft red berry fruits along with red and violet florals, and herbal nuances. Medium-bodied, this is an elegantly proportioned wine with bright, up-front red floral and cherry-berry fruit flavours. Lively acidity enhances the fruitiness and the palate is supported by light, grainy tannins. This has drive and a good palate line which continues to a moderately long finish with an amalgam of floral and oak spices. This bright and lively, elegant Pinot Noir has an attractive floral and spicy lift. Serve with poultry and pork over the next 4-5 years. Fruit from the ‘Terrace' vineyard, Pisa, fermented to 14.2% alc., the wine aged 10 months in French oak. 140 cases made. 17.5-/20 Aug 2012 RRP $33.00

TOSQ Central Otago Pinot Noir 2010

Pinot Noir from New Zealand – Otago

17/20

Fruit from the ‘Terrace' vineyard, Pisa, fermented to 14.1% alc., the wine aged 10 months in one-third new French oak, then aged over winter in seasoned oak before bottling. Fullish, moderately dark, purple-hued ruby-red colour. The nose is softly full and a little restrained in expression, showing ripe dark cherry and plum fruit aromas, with red berry fruit and a little reductive earthiness emerging. Medium-full bodied, the fruit expression is a little shy, but showing flavours of ripe dark berries and cherries with plum notes. This has good weight and presence, the mouthfeel is rounded and plump, the generosity enhanced by soft acidity. Tannin extraction is balanced and supports the fruit sweetness, and carries through to a moderately long, solid finish. This is a ripe fruited Pinot Noir with weight and depth, the flavours are a little shy at present. Match with hearty Mediterranean fare over the next 4-5+ years. 250 cases made. 17.0/20 Aug 2012 RRP $37.95
