Valli Vineyards 2010 Pinot Noirs

19 July,2012
As one of Otago's veteran winemakers, Grant Taylor commands attention. His experience of 20 vintages in the district has provided him with the breadth and detail to understand the climate, sub-regions, soils and sites better than most, as well as giving him the skill to deal with amost any kind of vintage. The formation of his Valli Vineyards label is Grant's personal expression of sub-regional character with the Pinot Noir variety, and his previous releases of Gibbston and Bannockburn wine from Central Otago, and the Waitaki Valley in north Otago have been fascinating and clearly representative of those areas. (Click here to see my reviews of the 2009 Pinot Noirs.) Grant reckons 2010 is possibly the very best vintage he has seen in his 20 years in Otago, and to mark it, the Valli Vineyards single-vineyard Pinot Noirs will include a wine from the Bendigo region. Grant was involved in establishing Gibbston Valley's plantings in the Bendigo area, and found the ‘Chinaman's Terrace' site was his favourite. This new wine is made from Pinot Noir fruit sourced from there. This is an outstanding group of Pinot Noirs from Grant Taylor and immensely instructive to taste and thoroughly enjoyable to drink. www.valliwine.com

Valli ‘Waitaki Vineyard' North Otago Pinot Noir 2010

Pinot Noir from New Zealand – Otago

19/20
Very dark red colour, quite full, this has a powerful and bold bouquet, with lively, bright, dark red berry fruits and plums, revealing layers of savoury herb notes. Seeemingly open and juicy with plush red fruits, this builds in concentration, and unfolds flavours of char, toast, spices and dried herbs from its density. 19.0/20 Jan 2013

Dark, deep, purple-hued ruby-red colour, lighter on rim, very youthful in appearance. The nose is full, firmly packed with intense aromas of dark berry fruits complexed by savoury dried herb and undergrowth aromas. Layers of black earth and minerally detail unfolds in the glass adding considerable interest. Medium-full bodied, concentrated, tightly bound and dense flavours of savoury red berry fruit, dried herbs and mineral-earth flavours are enlivened by bright acidity, resulting in excellent energy and tension. Fine-grained tannins support and drive the unfolding, layered flavours, and the wine finishes with long and concentrated, funky liquorice, spice and herb notes. This is a multi-layered, complex Pinot Noir with real concentration. Serve with mushroom-influenced game meat dishes over the next 7-9 years. Clones 5 and 115 from vines planted in 2001 in the Waitaki Valley, fermented with 25% whole bunch to 13.5% alc., the wine aged 11 months in 36% new French oak barrels. 300 cases made. 19.0+/20 Jul 2012 RRP $65.00

Valli ‘Gibbston Vineyard' Central Otago Pinot Noir 2010

Pinot Noir from New Zealand – Otago

19.5/20

Clones 5, 6, 115, 113, 114 and 777 from Gibbston vines planted in 2000, fermented with 25% whole bunch to 13.5% alc., the wine aged 11 months in 32% new French oak barrels. Full, even, dark, purple-hued ruby-red colour with youthful purple rim. The bouquet is extremely elegant in proportion and very refined in expression, with subtly lifted dark red and violetty florals enhancing the dark red berry and cherry aromas. This has beauty in its aromatics. Medium-bodied, this is elegant in presentation, but has a concentrated underlying core to the palate. Detailed flavours of dark red berry and black fruits are lifted by ethereal floral notes and are framed by tightly concentrated and fine-grained tannins. Bright acidity contributes to the fruit sweetness and the flavours flow with finesse to a very long and sustained finish of dark red fruits, florals and some thyme herb nuances. A wine of great beauty and refinement, and with the structure and balance to age 8-10 years. Match with duck and pork. 700 cases made. 19.5/20 Jul 2012 RRP $65.00

Valli ‘Bannockburn Vineyard' Central Otago Pinot Noir 2010

Full, dark, deep, black-hued ruby-red colour with purple hues. This has a full, softly rounded nose of ripe dark plum aromas with notes of liquorice, spices, oak and thyme herbs, lifted with violetty florals. Medium-full bodied, rich, luscious and succulent flavours of ripe, sweet black berry and cherry fruit intermingle with black plum elements. The palate is very smooth and silky with very fine, underlying tannins, the mouthfeel lacy and juicy from bright and balanced acidity. The flavours flow seamlessly along the palate line with finesse and elegance, carrying to a very refined, long finish of black fruits and oak spices. This is a silky-smooth Pinot Noir with lush and ripe black fruit flavours. Match with Mediterranean and Middle Eastern red meat dishes over the next 7-9+ years.
