Wanaka Road - Mount Edward's Secondary Tier

15 February,2012
Duncan Forsyth continues his niche market filling adding to the wines in the Wanaka Road range with the release of a Pinot Gris from the 2011 vintage and a Riesling from 2008 to support his premium ‘Mount Edward' and the value ‘Earth's End' wines. This tier has the benefits of protecting the integrity of the top label, as well as offering alternative presentations of the same variety at different price points. The brand refers to the road that follows the western banks of Lake Dunstan from Cromwell to Wanaka. Here is my review of the new release ‘Wanaka Road' wines. www.mountedward.com

Wanaka Road Central Otago Pinot Gris 2011

Pinot Gris from New Zealand – Otago

17.5/20
Fruit from the ‘L'Attitude' vineyard, Lowburn, WBP and fermented to 13.5% alc. and 5.5 g/L rs in tank, the wine given 2 months lees contact, with no oak contact. Bright, pale straw-yellow colour, pale on edge. The bouquet is delicate with ethereal florals and subtle pear fruit along with hints of minerals. Off-dry to taste, this is very elegantly presented with light, mineral-infused pear flavours, the fruit showing attractive lusciousness and richness. A little alcohol warmth shows, contributing a little creaminess to the textures, but good acid cut and crispness balances the sweetness. The wine has a refreshing finish of pears and flint. An elegant and delicately luscious Pinot Gris with nuances. Match with Thai, Japanese and Vietnamese cuisine over the next 3+ years. 17.5/20 Jan 2012 RRP $22.50

Wanaka Road Central Otago Riesling 2008

Riesling from New Zealand – Otago

16+/20
Bright lemon-straw yellow colour with some green hues and a pale rim, the aromatics are light and soft, with limes, white florals and delicate nuances of toast and honey along with flinty reduction elements. Medium-dry to taste, the fruit expression is light and soft, quite accessible, with gentle florals and limes. Some flintiness reins in the fruitiness, but this has balanced acidity with good liveliness that carries through to a subtle finish with honey notes. Fruit from the ‘L'Attitude' vineyard in Lowburn, cool-fermented to 12.0% alc and 22 g/L rs. Serve as an aperitif, or match with most Asian cuisine over the next 2-3 years. 16.0+/20 Feb 2012 RRP $15.50
