Doctors Flat Pinot Noir 2010

Doctors Flat Pinot Noir 2010

As with most winemakers, owning a piece of land is their way of keeping ‘grounded' and connected with the land. Steve Davies, well-known for his time making the excellent Carrick wines acquired a 3 ha site in Bannockburn at 100 m above Lake Dunstan and planted it to Pinot Noir Dijon clones 114, 115 and 777 over five blocks in 2002. A slightly cooler site than many in the area, Steve is now finding a consistent vineyard character expressed as a "slightly spicy, violet, blackberry component that is evident despite any seasonal variation”. Steve first released his own ‘Doctors Flat' Pinot Noir with the 2008 vintage, which was followed quickly by the 2009. (Click here for my reviews.) Both wines have been well-received and his 2010 vintage Pinot Noir is about to be put out on the market. It is the most seriously constructed to date and is very finely presented as the first two releases. Here is my review. www.doctorsflat.co.nz

Doctors Flat Central Otago Pinot Noir 2010

Pinot Noir from New Zealand – Otago
Review Date - 03-Feb-2014

19+/20

Dark, deep, purple-hued ruby red. The bouquet very concentrated with ripe black berry and cherry fruit aromas, still very primary, with some complexities of whole bunch, minerals, liquorice, spice and florals. On palate a lovely purity of fruit, dark raspberries and black cherries, with minerals and savoury herb intricacy. The firm and tightly concentrated tannin core is the feature of the mouthfeel, and along with fresh, bright acidity, the palate is driven, carrying though to a lingering, minerally finish. This has opened up revealing the structure and vibrancy of the best of the 2010 vintage, and has the potential to develop another 6-8 years. 19.0+/20 Jan 2014

Dark, deep ruby-red colour, with youthful purple hues. The nose is tightly bound with firmly concentrated aromas of ripe dark red berry fruits, complexed by hints of liquorice, dark herbs, oak toast and a little reduction which melds with bouquet with breathing. Medium-full bodied, rich and concentrated flavours of ripe, dark berry fruits, plums with liquorice and thyme herbs form a deep core. The wine is brooding, but reveals a savoury sweetness and succulence, supported by fine-grained, firm tannins that drive the palate line. Gentle acidity provides vitality and life and enhances the very long, delicately lush fruit flavours on the finish. This is a concentrated and finely structured and presented Pinot Noir with richness and subtle succulence. It will develop well to reveal plenty of character over the next 6-8 years. Serve with roasted red meat dishes. Clones 115, 777 and 114 from the ‘Doctors Flat' vineyard, Bannockburn, fermented with 20% whole bunch and indigenous yeast fermented to 14.0% alc., the wine kept on skins 27 days and aged 12 months in one-third new French oak barrels. 188 cases made. 18.0+/20 Sep 2012 RRP $44.00
