Mills Reef ‘Reserve’ Gimblett Gravels Hawke’s Bay Syrah 2014

Syrah from New Zealand – Hawke’s Bay
Review Date - 01-Nov-2015

Dark, deep, purple-hued ruby-red colour, youthful in appearance. The nose is full with soft, ripe and aromatic blackberry and dark red berry fruits melded with harmoniously interwoven violet and lavender florals, black pepper and spices. The aromatics blossom with aeration. Medium-bodied, the flavours of ripe blackberry fruit, black pepper, soft spices and violet florals fill the mouth. The fruit is supported by fine-grained, dry tannin structure, the acidity softly integrated. The mouthfeel is balanced with a core of fruit melded with the textures, and the wine carries to a long, lingering finish with some grip. This is a soft, dry-textured Syrah with ripe black berried and black peppery fruit with floral and spice interest. Match with Middle Eastern lamb and game meat dishes over the next 5 years. Fruit from the ‘Mere Road’ vineyard, given a cold soak and fermented in open top and closed tanks, and ‘Integrale’ barrels to 12.5% alc., the wine aged 13 months in 25% new French oak. 18.5-/20 Nov 2015 RRP $24.95
