Red Barrel Hawke’s Bay Syrah 2013

Syrah from New Zealand – Hawke’s Bay
Review Date - 19-Oct-2017

18.5-/20

Full, very dark, deep, black-hued ruby-red colour, a little lighter on the rim. The nose is full with soft, ripe dark red and black berried fruits harmoniously melded with layers of Asian spices, black pepper, along with subtle white pepper and lifted dark red floral notes. The aromatics build in intensity, unveiling earth and liquorice elements with aeration. Medium-full bodied, the palate features solidly packed flavours of dark red berry fruits, plums and spices, entwined with black pepper, earth and savoury red florals. Soft, grainy textures underline the fruit and fill the mouth, with soft, balanced acidity adding drive and energy. The wine flows positively unfolding spice, liquorice and toasty oak nuances, carrying through to an elegant, long lingering, fine-textured, dry finish. This is a softly concentrated, ripe Syrah with flavours of black fruits, spices and earth, on a fine, grainy-textured palate. Match with barbecued and roasted red meat dishes over the next 6-8 years. Fruit from the ‘House’ and ‘Arataki’ blocks of the Red Barrel vineyard, Havelock North, hand-picked and fermented to 14.0% alc., the wine aged 18 months in 20% new French oak barrels. 180 dozen made. 18.5-/20 Sep 2015 RRP $30.00
