Terrace Edge Waipara Valley Syrah 2016

Syrah from New Zealand – Canterbury & Waipara
Review Date - 25-Jul-2017

18.5+/20

Very dark, deep, black-hued purple-ruby colour, a little lighter on the rim. Youthful in appearance. The nose is gently full and voluminous, the fruit expression a little restrained, but revealing aromas of ripe blackberry and dark raspberries, with notes of Asian spices, violet florals and black pepper detail. This has excellent vinous presence. Full-bodied, the palate has a finely concentrated, but rich core of vibrant blackberry and dark raspberry fruit, with layers of spices and florals, with black mineral elements. This has sweetness and lusciousness, with suggestions of opulence, but the fruit is a little checked in exuberance. The mouthfeel is refined in texture with ripe fine-grained tannin extraction, and the fruit is enlivened by fresh acidity, providing a fresh, blossoming finish. This is a finely concentrated, rich Syrah with blackberry and raspberry fruit with florals and spices on a fine-grained, fresh palate. The wine is a little shy at present, but will bloom. Match with duck, pork, lamb, beef and venison over the next 6-7+ years. MS and ‘Stonecroft’ clone Syrah fruit, hand-picked, fully-destemmed and co-fermented by indigenous yeasts with 0.55% Viognier to 14.5% alc., the wine spending approx. 3 weeks on skins and aged 13 months in 25% new French oak. 18.5+/20 Jul 2017 RRP $32.00
