Inspired by the excellent condition of his Nga Waka Riesling
1994 at a recent ‘flash mob’ tasting event at the Martinborough Wine Centre,
Roger Parkinson has decided to conduct a vertical tasting of all of the
Rieslings he has made under the Nga Waka label.
Labelled ‘Back to the Future’, the tasting will feature the wines from
1993 through to 2005, and the new release 2011.
The fruit comes primarily from 1.4 ha of vines planted in
1988. The first crops of the vines were sold
to Palliser, and Roger commenced making the Nga Waka wine in 1993 once back
from his studies. The wine was
continually made until 2005. From 2006
to 2010, the fruit was dedicated to the ‘Three Paddles’ label, but Roger
relaunched the Nga Waka Riesling with the 2011, which is just now become
Roger sees Riesling as variety deserving bottle age, and
also, it reflects the growing season very clearly. For these reasons alone, the tasting will be
worth attending. Wine writer Joelle
Thomson, who encouraged the holding of the tasting, and a confirmed Riesling
aficionado, will be present, and between Roger and Joelle, there will be an
informed and spirited discussion.
